Doug Free is scheduled to make 10 to 11 million next season. So taking a 7 million Cap hit next season is the same as having Winston for 3 million + Doug Frees 7 million Cap hit as opposed to keeping Doug Free for 10 million or more. The salary is a washout but Eric Winston is an upgrade over Free.
free makes 8 mil next year. but the only way he will be here is if he lowers his salary thus freeing up more money. free is never gonna be on the team if he does'nt take the cut. but the cut saves you lots of money where cutting him and adding another guy cost you money

I don't think the Free vs Winston issue is about money, per se. Apparently they don't believe that Winston is better. Also, they like the fact that Free can play the Right or Left side; whereas, Winston is a RT only.

His remaining base salaries are irrelevant.

The important numbers are the remaining amount from his prorated bonuses and the actual number that they are offering him as a 2013 base salary.

The remaining prorated bonus money is approximately 10M. This will be spread out over 2013 and 2014 if he is cut or 2013, 2014 and 2015 if he plays in 2013 and then gets cut.

The reports are between 2M and 3.5M on the amount that they are offering him as base salary for 2013.

The overall 2013 salary cap hit of paying Free a 3M base salary in 2013 is basically the same as the cap hit of paying Winston a 3M base salary in 2013. Free's prorated money is there with or without him on the roster.

They have 5M in cap space available and more after June 1st. If they wanted to sign Winston for 3M, they could do it now.

the differnce is if he is on the roster it's spread out till 2016, if he is cut it's all due or in the case of a june 1 cut it's split over the two years

Not sure why people have this June 1st date in mind. It means nothing. We can cut free now and designate him a post June 1st cut. It changes nothing. We are just dragging our feet, nothing else to it...
The salary cap relief from designating a June 1st cut still doesn't take effect until Jun1, so if you needed the cap space savings to sign someone like Winston then you would have to wait. That said, it seems like you all have enough space if you wanted to so it is not very important.

Even if Dougie was average, you don't pay a RT left tackle money, and we all know Free is below average. What are they waiting for? His stupid agent to find another team that wants him? When it comes to o-line, Jerry has a pocket full of cryptonite.....:bang2:

Stop messing around Jerry, pay the fa and move on......

Yeah, I agree. Didn't they give Free that contract after spending a top 10 pick on Smith? That means they probably knew they were planning on switching Free back to the right side after a year. That means they knew they were paying a soon to be RT the same you would pay a top LT. His awful production aside, they should have planned better.

So you dump free and take the cap hit. On top of that, you pay a FA 3-4 million to replace him (who really isn't all that much better). We're already against the cap for next year, and it won't likely go up much. We have guys like Lee, Dez, Tyron, Murray, etc. that will need to be extended. What if the money isn't there to take care of those guys? You want to risk losing one or more of them, just so we can sign Eric Winston? Do you want to have to keep mortgaging the future with 3-5 more restructures every year? Financially, that's just a bad way to run the franchise. You can't just make moves in a vacuum. Anything we do now will affect things down the road.

exactly. and we are'nt against the cap, we are way over the cap next year and while you can rework more contracts the best answer is get the the young guys playing and get free to take a pay cut. going out and buying another rt is just not a smart move unless you have to do it. if free won't take a cut then you may have no choice but it's smart to try and get free much cheap and let him and parnell compete for the job. evryone would like to upgrade the position but we don't have the money to keep upgrading with free agents

The way it is now is actually the bigger deficit. Count your losses and move on... Winston will cost us less and he's a better player, no brainer...
