I think we took a TE this year and will take another next year in part so they can move on from Schultz

I don’t think they want to get a long term deal done with Schultz. I think this tag business was just to buy them time to develop a replacement or two.

they do not want a long term deal at 10M plus thus the desire to have multiple years to draft TE.

Its not just top 3 guys getting paid.
Gesicki also got franchised and Geodert got nearly 15M a year.
Njoku got 14m a year.

TE was low and has exploded. That is why there are two teams using the tag on TEs this year whereas neither TE is a star type player.

Market value is determined by the most recent contracts.

It’s a business and you can’t pay everyone
I think they think they can develop a TE and save on that position

The only reason they had to tag him was Jarwin flamed out or they wouldn’t have tagged him
But losing cooper, Wilson and gallups injury along with Jarwin, I think they had no choice

which is not surprising. they have him for a year. they will see what they have with Ferguson, McKeon and what else might hit the market next year. so smart move on their part all around.

Particularly for a guy like Schultz who took a while to emerge. Schultz would have jumped at playing on the tag or even a four year deal that averaged around the tag... but when guys like Njoku gets 4 year at close to 13 mil per year, Jonnu Smith gets 12.5 per over 4 years and the tag is about 11 mill ... there is going to be an issue. Particularly since neither have produced like Schultz

Yep, something tells me there'll be another TE selection being made in the next draft. Schultz's Cowboys days seem limited.

I'll kinda hate to see him go but it is what it is! I'm pretty sure Dak will be devastated. Take away sll those dumpoffs to Schultz, it'll be tough.

They don't want to re-sign him, at least not right now. The Browns are the ones that kind of screwed him. Dallas has him signed on the tag for $10 million. They can tag him again next year for $13 and change million. He now wants $14 million + thanks to the Browns. Dallas has no incentive to do it. They have him for the next 2 years for $23 million and a similar rookie they can watch develop. Why sign him for 4 or 5 years at $14 million + right now? Doing so makes no sense!

I mean that is not how the market responded at all. The market is paying other bad TEs 13m+ per year and did it THIS offseason. Right now for instance the franchise tag for TEs is tied for the 8th highest AAV for this year. That is not top 5. If you argued he should be 5th then he would be making 13.7m per year which is the market value for a top 5 TE.

I don't think there is another step for him. I think he is pretty good. Or I think he is pretty good in the role the cowboys have for him, and is most likely worth that money. I personally would not spend the money on him. What I was trying to say, is that if he is not abnormally good, I would rather the money go elsewhere, and find someone else to replace him. Even if what they find is not quite as good, until they find a TE who is of better or equal quality, they should tweak the offense, and make up those yards some other way.

The next step is to improve his blocking. If he becomes a plus blocker and does as well as he has been as a receiver, then he'll be worth the contract. However, whether we'll pay him that (if his blocking improves) will depend a lot on Ferguson. If he proves capable of replacing him, then we'll move on. But if he doesn't, then the options are to pay Schultz (who would be proven), spend an early pick on the position (which might turn out like Gavin Escobar) or spend another midrounder and hope (which would not be smart).

We could and probably would add a cheap FA, but then all we're liable to end up with is a lesser player starting. I want to see how it plays out this year before making any decision, which is why I would like to see Dallas keep him on the tag.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Schultz. I don’t fault him for wanting to get paid. That said, he’s not a game changing TE. He’s a product of his surroundings. Dallas has had arguably one of the NFL’s best WR trio’s the last couple of years and Shultz took advantage.. as any decent TE should have.

He become a sure handed outlet for Dak. Yet that, by no means, makes him an elite TE. Good for him for turning his career around and seizing the moment . But now, he’s just trying to take advantage of Dallas’s perceived ‘weak’ receiver core. There’s no chance in Hell they would be pushing this hard for a new contract if Amari Cooper was still here. His agent believes he has Dallas cornered, but I don’t believe the Jones care enough to break. Yeah.. Dak broke them.. even Lawrence and Zeke. But there’s nothing special about Shultz. He’s just a really solid/decent player. And thats not a slight against him.

Shultz is average at best in every physical matrix AND he can not block a phone call. No offense, I’d rather roll with Ferguson into the season if Shultz wants to play hardball. Yet, obviously Dal is willing to guarantee $10+mil this season.. so what’s the problem? If Shultz plays well, he’ll get paid by someone.. and Dal will draft a top end player on a rookie deal. I’m good with that.

The real problem is the agent. He’s playing poker with a pair of Jacks.. I think the Jones are calling his bluff.

I’d also say that players should be valued per production, but I suppose that’s a novel idea
