First of all, nobody except people trying to create an argument is talking about treating Schultz as having the same market value as the elite TE's. Kittle is already well above what Schultz could expect, and if he and Kelce were negotiating today their market would be miles above Schultz.

As for Schultz stats only being based on underneath, dump offs etc ... Hockinson only averaged 9.6 yards per catch and 6.9 yards per attempt last year, so what were his contributions based on?

What Schultz was asked to do was what the team needed. He had Cooper, Lamb, Gallup and Wilson taking the deeper routes, yet even competing for balls with those guys he was one of the top TE's in the NFL.

Besides, I'm not sure a 12 yard TD counts more on the scoreboard than an 9 yard TD. Of course Schultz also had TDs of 19, 22 & 32 yards, but why count those?

But let's move to the reality of TE contracts. You act as if it is just the Kelce/Kittle/Andrews level guys that get big contracts. That's not remotely true. It doesn't even take a Goedert level guy, or a Schultz level guy. David Njoku recently signed a contract that averages $13.7 million/year, with $28 million guaranteed. Jonnu Smith signed a contract a year ago that averages $12.5 million/year with over $31 million guaranteed. Look at what those guys produced compared to Schultz. They aren't even in the same stratosphere. That's just the current market environment

" Did what he was asked to do " ... that's fine.., do what it is in your limits ...play to his best strengths, don't ask him to expose his weaknesses, ..that's what coaches
are for. Have the big boys clear out the bigger open areas of the field while the underneath guy surveys the soft sots in the zone areas, ..the roll outs ..

Nope, if the Browns feel Austin Cooper is worth chasing after the big FA money, and chancing him over even their 1st rd pick David Njoku- for whatever reason, that's their prerogative.

if that's how those NFL teams choose to prioritize their views and needs for a TE, limited or not. questionable or not so be it ..
. but if we the Cowboys are not seeing themselves in the market to exceed and overpay for a a limited, zone TE and choosing to tag him one lone year, ..so be it.

Your details are not correct, that's what I'm trying to tell you. You have this idea in your head that it's easy to get open at an NFL level. No matter how many details you go over, that idea is not correct, which makes your details irrelevant.

and if some are determined to defend their underdog hero, its' not gonna matter about details, as it's set in their heads that they are gonna
have their own details, their own views and opinions otherwise ... but hey, that's cool and da gang ...

It wasn't what was "within his limits" He obviously had some longer TD's and other catches, and had contested catches as well. The notion that all he ever contributed was uncontested dump offs is plain false. It's also bogus to ignore that all TE's work underneath routes as well. Ultimately the underneath routes he ran were because that's was what the team needed because they had 4 quality WR handling most of the deeper routes. Clearly it doesn't make sense to have everyone at the same depth. An effective offense attacks from several layers.

But if you want to keep comparing him to the Kittle/Kelce type players, that's bogus as well. Of course he isn't the threat they are, but his market value isn't the same as theirs either. There aren't Kelce/Kittle level guys to be had by any team that wants one.

As for it being the prerogative of others to pay big contracts for lesser players, yes it is, but you can't simply use that as an excuse to bury your sand on what the market is. Obviously the Cowboys have to make up their mind on how to spend their money, and maybe they will ultimately decide not to commit to Schultz longer term, but that doesn't mean the price it would take to sign Schultz is unreasonable for a guy that has done as well as he has. If that's how the Cowboys go after this season it will just be just making a tough budget decision

See, and now you're completely misreading me. Bad evaluation.

And, you are doing exactly to a T what you are accusing me of doing. You are determined to undermine Schultz, no matter what, and you will not let that go no matter what. Thank gawd for BSPN leading the way to your thoughts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How are any of you surprised.

Schultz really stepped up after Jarwin got hurt. He's played really well, ironically, not to his scouting report which had him as more of a blocker.

I've noted before Njoku and others who performed way below Schultz, got big deals. The smart move all around is to let him play on the tag. If he shows he is elite, you keep him, if not, you can tag again or settle for the 3rd round compensatory pick.
