With playoffs ongoing in high school football, I’ve had an opportunity to stand on the Texas Stadium sidelines the past few weeks. Looking over the names on the Ring of Honor reminds me again of how so many worthy Cowboys have yet to even make our own team’s Hall of Fame!

Here are a few names that came to mind of former and retired players, coaches, and (in one case) fans who merit serious consideration. Feel free to add, remove, and discuss.

Drew Pearson
Harvey Martin
Charlie Waters
Ed “Too Tall” Jones
Dan Reeves
Danny White
Everson Walls
Bill Bates
Jim Jeffcoat
Darren Woodson
Jay Novacek
Erik Williams, Mark Tuinei, and Nate Newton (like the Triplets)
Daryl “Moose” Johnston
Jimmy Johnson
Larry Allen (once retired)
Crazy Ray

I think Harvey Martin and Darren Woodson should be next to go in.

Why Dan Reeves? He was an OK RB for us for a few years and an assistant coach but he made most of his name coaching elsewhere.

I also disagree with Jimmy Johnson as he was only here for a few years. Not sure about Jim Jeffcoat either, I would add Tony Tolbert ahead of him.

Guys I would add to your list are:

George Andrie - 11 years, 5 pro-bowls
Cornell Green - 13 years, 5 pro-bowls, 3 All-Pro
Pat Donovan - 9 years, 4 pro-bowls
Frank Clarke - 8 years
Tony Hill - 10 years, 3 pro-bowls
Herb Scott - 10 years, 3 pro-bowls, 2 All-Pro
Ralph Neely - 13 years, 2 pro-bowls, 3 All-Pro

There are some I think you could definitely consider, but many I was surprised to see were not already there! "How are they not in?" It's crazy!

As a fan, it's HARD to NOT put any of these players in...they've all brought so much to the organization over the years. I mean I grew up admiring Martin, Waters, Too Tall, Pearson, Walls, etc. and witnessed the greatness of the players of the last, true dynasty in the 90s so there's plenty of bias when it comes to honoring the former greats. Even Danny White, who retired w/ most of Dallas' passing records (but no rings as the starting QB) and Jeffcoat (unheralded but one of the best DL to wear the Star), helped bridge the gap between the 70s and 90s with some good seasons and should be recognized. I know Schramm and co. wanted the Ring to be "sacred" but with such an illustrious history Cowboys players are like Lay's chips-you cannot have just one (or 2 or 10 for that matter)! Methinks the Cowboys Hall of Fame will be a crowded place if it comes to fruition. Is JJ putting one in his new Mecca in Arlington?

The ones highlighted are my picks.

I love the exclusivity of the Ring of Honor. Sure there probably are a few guys that should be added. For me that would be Harvey Martin, Drew Pearson and Darren Woodson and then Larry Allen once he retires.

I like that we have to argue to get these guys in. I rather do that than be a fan wondering why a certain guy is part of their team hall of fame. If I was a Colts fan I would be embarrassed that Jim Harbaugh was in the Indy Colts HoF. Was it the 4 seasons he played in Indy? Was it the 86.6 QB rating during those 4 years? Was it the 2-2 record in the playoffs as a Colt? Was it the 51.3% completion percentage and 72.4 QB rating in the playoffs as a Colt?

Hey! They almost beat the Steelers that year!

(and would've gotten stomped by us in the Super Bowl)

Good point. I must have been thinking of his later coaching tenure, which shouldn't count.

Jeffcoat I could go either way on, but JJ gets a lot of credit for getting the team turned around. Just as many Super Bowl victories as Landry.

Nice list. I wasn't able to see them when they played, so I'm not as familiar with those, but they definitely have pedigree.

Couldn't agree more. Not only with the names you added, but with Reeves being omitted. I think the world of the guy, but he was average at best as a player.

JJ will never induct players before his time of ownership.

He already has inducted players from the previous era as well as Landry and Schramm.

Harvey Martin, to answer the question.

John Niland, because no retired player listed in the OP went to more Pro Bowls than he did.

I would have listed Niland but he had some legal issues after he left the Cowboys which would keep him out IMO since they had to do with a minor.

I do believe he belongs in the HoF but not the Ring Of Honor which to me is about more than simply what a guy did on the field but how they represented the Dallas Cowboys as well. That was why it took so long for Bob Hayes to finally be added (still waiting for the HoF for him :bang2: ).

Ouch. I'd never heard that before, but I can see why that might rule him out.

I don't think any other name deserves mention along with Martin's though. It's him, and then everybody else.

I had a feeling that I was mixing his legal problems up with someone else (Rafael Septien) and here's what I found...

The '80s were checkered with drugs, alcohol and women. In 1987, he was jailed for 11 months for making false statements to obtain a loan.

He was just in trouble a lot is all but has eventually turned his life around, so OK, he can be added to the list.
