ARLINGTON — Owner Jerry Jones and vice president Stephen Jones are denying a report by NBC that the Cowboys have decided to move on from injured defensive tackle Jay Ratliff.

However, they did nothing to clear up the mystery on when or if he will play with the team this season.

NBC sideline reporter Michele Tafoya made her report based on a conversation she had with Jerry Jones.

According to Tafoya: “My interpretation based on Jerry Jones’ body language and his tone is that Jay Ratliff will not be playing for the Cowboys anymore.”

“I’m not familiar with that report,” Jerry Jones said after the game.

i don't understand this Ratliff saga, why can't the organization just come out and give a definitive answer on whether he is staying or not? What possible advantage is there to keeping this whole thing under wraps?

Frankly, not having Ratliff contribute this season is a disaster organizationally. How did things get this bad?

From being one of the stalwarts of the new 4-3 to probably missing the entire season due to a injury incurred in the conditioning drill of training camp?

What I wonder about is how the front-office thought things where going to be different from last season when Ratliff was injured a lot AND had a altercation with Jerry Jones in the locker room.

I'm lost and I feel like I should know what's going on but I don't. There's clearly more to this than Rats injury, what is it?

Maybe because they legitimately don't know? He's been rehabbing 50% of the time away from the Ranch and only go by daily reports. This week will tell the tale.

Why not cut him? cap reasons? Man, I hope Jerry learns his lesson from this but I don't believe he will.

If he is fit enough , then it could be a big help for the team and himself if he plays some snaps per game , as he will be let go at the end of year anyway.

The advantage to not cutting Ratliff is hope he comes back

What's the advantage to bashing him or cutting him if you want his help?

This. The last time Jerry released a player out of spite he went on to become one of the best WRs in the league. If the guy can back on the field healthy he can help the team.

Yes, he can practice this week without being activated. If he does not practice or at least do work on the side this week, then it seems unlikely that he will ever be activated.

Jimmy Smith. "Before the 1994 season, Smith was cut by the Cowboys."

Jerry didn't want to cut Smith and it wasn't Jerry's call at the time. It was Jimmy's. Having said that, it was a complete numbers game when Smith got cut. The Cowboys did not want to cut him but they really had no choice. He could not get on the field. I think the two situations are completely different.

BTW, I think it was 93 and he was also cut by Philly before he was picked up by the Jags.

No, they could have put him on IR but he had been on IR the previous season. Jerry wanted him to take a pay cut although his salary was only about 600k. He didn't agree to the salary cut and they released him.

This. It was 94 and Jerry was not happy with Smith's unwillingness to throw the team a bone after they stuck with him. He was quoted several times on local radio shows that he was not happy with Smith. Smith's release was personal as well as cap-related.

I can't remember when Smith was cut, and I'm too lazy to look it up, but if it was in 1994 then Jimmy had nothing to do with it because he wasn't even with the team anymore by then.

600k 10 yrs ago was a chunk of cash worth in the area of approx. 1.0 mill in todays currency.....
