cowboys notes from practice, the cowboys offense tried a new formation that baffled the cowboys defense. Witten would line up behind John Phillips and depending how the defense reacted to phillips releasing off the line, witten would go other way, or sometimes streak past phillips on a deep route, while the cowboys defense was confused by this new formation.

We're going to have a lot of versatility, for sure.

Interesting that it's Phillips, and not Bennett, that Jason is lining up behind.

Sounds like the formation that Green Bay killed us with in that one playoff game, where Chmura and Keith Jackson ran out of this formation. We won the game but that formation was very effective against our defense.

yep, their getting the cowboys defense ready to defend against it

also dez caught the ball pretty well, but roy w. tried to snare some balls with one hand, if he had tried to double catch the ball with both hands roy would have made the reception.

mcgee showed a nice touch on a deep pass with titus ryan catching the ball for a td at goaline over newman

romo and witten lit up the young defenders with the timing of knowing each other since 2003

dez, titus, gordon and mccann each took turns receiving punts, catching them cleanly while gordon had the only muffed drop

Wonderful, so we're still going with the read-and-react offensive philosophy. Brilliant! If it hasn't worked before, why change now?

Hey, how long do you guys think defenses will take to catch up and fugure these tricky-formations out, and then use them to bait Dallas (i.e. by using Dallas' own formations against them)?

Better asked, whch opposing team do you think will be the first to gloat about this in their post-game presser and say "we knew every play they were calling and and lined up our formations accordingly to force their movement and ultimatley get us in favorable defrensive matchups"?

Yeah, this offense had such tragic results last season I can't see why we wouldn't install a completely new system. Surely learning a whole new system this year instead of using the one that kept us from being a top offense last season, would be a stroke of genius...

/sarcasm...

Every team in the NFL utilizes some sort of "read and react" components within their offense systems. So do the defenses for that matter.

And what do you mean it hasn't worked? The Cowboys offense was one of the most explosive and productive in the league.

but if it does work......shouldnt they keep doing it...?

It's nice to know they are trying some different things. I just wonder why they are doing it when the media is there so they can report on it.

Nice ketch there! I remember that game and Jackson was killing us as the 2nd TE behind Chmura.

You mean like putting a guy in motion? As an offense, you want to do whatever you can to get the defense to tip their hand or to get them to check out of what they are doing to something less aggressive.

lol at people crying that we are adding more depth to our playbook just because our offense was already very good. isn't ones goal to get better?

Sometimes you just throw crap in there to make opposing teams have to waste time to practice against something else. This would make more sense closer to the season though...

to be fair that wouldn't surprise me.

And Crayton missed the whole shebang. Lost reps just help the guys that are there to take them.

Sometimes the offense has to pretend they are the opposition, in order to prepare the defense for what might happen. This second day of the 2010 OTAs could be one of those situations.

:D i didnt have binoculars; i was the fly on the wall

nah not really i just saw that from one of my sources, so i put it down for you zoners

You have to practice something like that to get it down. And sometimes it's difficult to defend things. But it figures someone would complain about putting new plays in.
