Misleading headline. He has not been tagged.

Here's the quote: "I still think that it's probably, you know, would be a stretch to think that we would have something done by Monday and beat the franchise tag deadline," Jones said. "Looks like we're eyeing a franchise tag on Dez, but certainly won't stop us from working hard to get a long term deal."

It is, but I think every one knew that's where this was headed.

So, this stops the clock running toward losing the tag option.

But, what happens if a team like New England decides they will pony up the two firsts for Dez? Does Dallas have a right of refusal?

He hasn't been tagged and guys get tagged all of the time and then sign a new deal months later and are no longer on the franchise tag.

uh, what happens if we are offered two firsts for Dez? Hopefully we just ask them where to sign.

Depends if it is NE or OAK. That's a big difference in #1s.

Buffalo traded their 2015 #1 and their number one last year to move up with CLE and draft Sammy Watkins. It has been done before. Except this time the team trading for Dez would have to give up 2 #1s and pay him top dollar.

There is an exclusive and non-exclusive franchise tag.

Exclusive: The player is locked into that team and can't negotiate with any outside teams.

Non-Exclusive: The player can negotiate with other teams, but if signed by another team they must give up 2 first round picks. The original team has the right to match the offer.

The formula for calculating the tag amount is slightly different between the two types of franchise tags.

I believe the Cowboys could match the offer.

Don't waste your time thinking about it. It's not happening.

I don't get these negotiations. Do both parties meet over a 7 course meal.... shoot the **** and say let's revisit this in 3 weeks... repeat cycle? How hard can it be to negotiate a contract? How many numbers are there? Clearly this is not my field of expertise but one would think this could be hashed out in a period of 48 hours of serious, focused negotiations.

Especially when you had all season to mull it over.

I think the two parties are just too far off. Dez probably wants much more money than the front office is willing to give.

Everyone spends all this time fretting over Murray and Dez.
What are there 3-400 free agents?
How any signings have there been....
McCown..
Anyone else?
Maybe a handful?

Dez isn't going anywhere.

Clearly this is what's going on. Perhaps waiting for other receivers to help further set the market? If there's a gap, I just don't get the stalling? What event other than just time will drive a deal? There's no other data or information that needs to be discovered (assuming Dez is clean in this Walmart BS).

Exactly. I love Dez and think he's great, but two firsts? I'd do it. The last two SB winners proved you don't need an All Pro WR to win one.

I would not trade him for two firsts. Any first rounder is a gamble. We have a top 3 WR at 26. His energy, spirit and passion is almost irreplaceable. Texas born/Cowboy at heart.
