Last month, a few members here questioned my writing abilities, compared me to Skip Bayless (that still stings lol) and basically claimed I wrote stuff without the how and why behind it.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion of course, but I wanted to share my Offseason Opus. This is how EYE would address what I consider the Cowboys needs via free agency and the draft, with the salary cap firmly in mind. This takes into account what the Cowboys like to do, but I differ in my opinion on some of their mandates. This is not a prediction for how the offseason would go, but how I'd go about fixing the perceived holes in the roster.

Let me know what you agree or disagree with. Cheers!

Nice effort but I have some issues.

I don't like Jackson in the FA. Don't like bringing back Carr, I'd rather take the risk on Claiborne and his much higher ceiling, and don't like the draft much, especially the first two picks.

I don't like getting nothing for Romo. I don't like moving dead money into next year. I don't like the draft. I don't like re signing Carr. I don't like that you still have Free on the team.

Other than that it is great.

What about Claiborne's last four years of averaging 8 games, intrigues you? You're literally paying twice as much per game over if you signed another CB.

Re: Moving dead money to next year.

If you understand how rolling over cap space works, this isn't an issue.

If Cowboys release Romo and accelerate all of his dead money into 2017, they have $5.1 million in space.
If Cowboys release Romo as June 1st, leaving $8.9 million on 2018 books, they have the OPTION to use all $14m this year. They also have the OPTION to take that extra $8.9 million, not use it but have it as "just in case" money, and if they don't, roll it over to next year to cover the $8.9m.

You're saying you'd rather the Cowboys don't have the option to use the money this year or next.

I have to confess, I love bringing in free agents, especially the high dollar ones. I don't know why.
I was so happy when the Cowboys signed Deon Sanders! Went crazy, when they got Charles Haley.
I miss those days. I feel like we are so poor now. And yes, I know that's it's smarter to build in the draft and we shouldn't overpay for FAs yada yada yada

I'm saying I would like for them to trade him and receive something in return. I also don't want them to have the option of spending the 8.9 mil this year and ending up with dead money next year. This is already year 2 of having Romo wreck the cap without even being the QB. I would prefer not to go for year 3. Rip it off like a band aid. Move on and learn from it.

Sign Mo to an incentive laden deal..........he is our best CB and will be cheap because of his history
Carr is a JAG

Love the Perry signing
McCown pass
Desean is a huge pass
Ellington pass
Paea two years too late

I would rather go for Comp picks than sign those bums...... Sign guys like JCharles that don't count as comp picks

Draft is too far away to project

Same here. Not a fan of the Jackson thing nor do I think it is even entered their minds. Other than that, it was okay. I like Cohen a lot, but wonder if the ST value is there since our third back will have to do it.

This beats the guy jumping out of a pool years ago.

Zack Martin will have his 5th year option kick in next week for 9m

There is no hurry to extend him.....they may do it in Sept or Oct if we have a couple million to pay for his signing bonus pro-ration

His cap hit will be less than 5m for 2018 and 2019 .....he doesn't need to budgeted for

Why do the Cowboys need a "third down back"? Dunbar gave us nothing in that role and Zeke is capable of blocking and receiving. Alfred Morris grows increasingly useless each passing year. Get a decent back up for Zeke who can play all downs, when needed.

Release Hannah - yes
Release Wilbur - yes
Resign Carr - yes
Resign Cooper - yes

The rest are stinkers to me
No DJax
No McCown
No Perry
No Ellington
No Butler

Desean Jackson would be a great addition i dont understand why some would not want the one thing that this offense lacks.
Good article.

I think the risk of his upside is worth it. Carr is a mediocre CB. People overvalue him because he's been healthy for us but that doesn't move me. I don't value mediocre players whose best attribute is that they stay healthy as highly as others, I guess.

Good article.

Here's some reasons why:

1) He's a pain in the butt and can cause some locker room issues
2) He's one dimensional
3) He's lazy
4) He's not going to be cheap
5) He can't block to save his life

But he runs well. That's about it.

I don't like that you still have Free on the team.

Especiallyif the plan is to free up cap space by cutting Hanna and Wilbur. Free had his moments last year but was wildly inconsistent, I don't see paying him 5 Million next year when he will be a year older.

I see plenty of reasons to cut Free and no compelling reasons to cut Hanna and Wilbur.
