Those highlight plays running around trying to make something happen are much less likely to happen in the playoffs with team that generally have good defenses (if not better).

It's not how many great plays you make, it is how many bad plays you don't make

Some of those sacks were not good

At least 2 times GB hit him with dirty hits below his knees which should have been flags

The routes we use offensively put extreme pressure on the OL.

We did the same stuff with bad OL's as we do with this OL.

As long as Garretts schemes are in play and Romo thinks he can buy time instead of just throwing it away or taking his checkdown then you will see him get hit.

All qbs get hit. But I should never see a player come Unblocked as many times as I did this season. Especially up the middle. Or in the lions game I saw 3 or 4 times a LB or DE was on romo as soon as he got the snap.

Also an amazing OL won't get your QB's back broken. That was on the OL not romo. He had no time then.

Like I said they are good but can get alot better.

Yeah especially the one that he got up hurt on. If that was brady or manning flags would have thrown from every official

Romo also took forever to throw the ball. I know atleast 4 times I was yelling to throw the ball.

The OL has been bad in the postseason but romo doesn't help holding the ball.

I think that's one area we will see him improve on next year.

He cut his Ints down this year. Next year I think we see him get rid of ball rather than take a sack.

I feel although he knew the D was improved it was still up,to the O to score max pts.

Also in this game he may have known something was wrong with baileys kicking and
was more into scoring TD 's than FG s

In terms of things I am generally disappointed in from the post-season, I'd have to say the pressure on Romo is the one of them.

I read Romo was hit 8 times yesterday -- not sure if that includes the 4 sacks or not. Considering Romo only threw the ball 19 times that seems like a very high percentage.

Any idea how many of the Cowboy's 10 sacks allowed are on Romo vs the line?

Is it safe to assume with another year's experience the team's pass blocking will improve.. ie Martin with another year of experience. Frederick in his 3rd year, etc?

A lot of the pressures in the Green Bay game were from Romo holding the ball too long; however, only 1 of the sacks was on Romo.

1st 13:38, 3 seconds, Leary
3rd 0:09, 3.5 seconds, Tyron
4th 15:00, 4 seconds, Leary
4th 6:26, 7 seconds, Romo

It happens.. Don't know what else to tell you.

I'll take our guys over anyone else's.. Just wish we could beat blitzes better with our pass and take some pressure off Romo.

It starts with that Oline, any defense can make the best QB look bad and unproductive under extreme pressure, why is at that both the teams we faced in the payoffs the QBs had more time in the pocket?, is it that 1-there OLine is that good? _2-our defense is not good? or 3- Oline is not good? To many variables I guess.

Some sacks were Romo not reading them correctly vs Lions, and a few were coverage/not throwing the ball away sacks vs Lions and Packers. Few of those sacks can be placed at the feet of the OL....not concerned.

That fine. I like most of the 5. Leary is weak in pass pro and we need a RT. But they aren't amazing. That shouldn't happen if your OL is amazing as you say. They are good and young and can become amazing. But they have some room for improvement.

It was never a great pass blocking line. If they brought 4 without an elite lineman, yeah... they could pick it up... but these guys were almost all primarily run blockers.

3 factors:

1. Romo holding it.
2. Receivers not getting open early.
3. Missing Free...He and Parnell are about equal individually but the OL as a whole blocks better with Free in there.

At least 5 of those were on Romo holding onto the ball way too long and not being willing to throw it away.

Was the offensive line the reason we lost to the Packers? Nope! The Murray fumble and the Cobb fumble were the difference in the game in my opinion.

Just like running the ball on 1st down 1000% of the time will catch up to you when you get down to the final 8 teams. The teams and coaches left at this point in the season change things up....i.e. Bellicheck!!

Dallas and Romo seemed to have trouble when Detroit and Green Bay both overloaded pass rushers on the right side of the offensive line (Parnell). They need to work on hot routes and blocking schemes alllowing Romo to roll safely away from that kind of junk. And it wouldn't hurt for Tony to sail the ball out of bounds if nobody is open. Just get outside the tackle first.

There's always going to be sacks with our QB and the offensive scheme.

The offensive scheme requires the ball to be held longer by the QB so the routes can develop. The other thing is as far as QB's go, Romo is a little on the shorter side. So he has to use his feet to find himself a passing lane. A QB like Joe Flacco doesn't have that issue so he can just throw the ball. With Romo, sometimes he may have to step in the direction to find a lane and that is where a pass rusher may be coming free.

It's not a knock on Romo or really the offense, it's just the way things are. The sacks didn't cost us the game and I would rather see this than us relying on a dink-n-dunk passing scheme where Romo doesn't get sacked, but we don't move the ball effectively either.

YR

The OL sucks at picking up stunts. They fail against it both running and passing and they have all year long. Sure some of the sacks are holding the ball too long but those aren't the shots that are getting him killed. That would be LB and DE stunting/blitzing and getting open lanes. They had some good games but the Free went out and they went back to sucking at it.

I'm open to the idea that scheme plays a part in this but our pass protection execution on blitz and stunt pickup needs to improve.

I am a big Romo fan....and I was stunned at some of the sacks he took. Especially when you consider how much experience he has. There was a play yesterday when he was out of the pocket and EVERYONE knows you just chuck it out of bounds...yet he took a sack. That is the crap I see RG3 or some other young inexperienced QB do....truly stunning!

That particular one scared the crap out of me, he got smashed! Im all for not giving up on the play and continuing to look down field, but just seemed like his internal clock wasnt working Sunday. Just get rid of it outside the pocket...I seriously could not believe he exposed himself like that. I was pleased with his overall play, it was more about being concerned for him and the next potential weeks to come.

What everyone is forgetting is that Romo has never been one to throw the ball away. The only difference (and why it is more noticeable this season) between this season and previous seasons is that he took more chances on risky throws in past seasons. This season, he took way fewer chances with the ball, so it led to him holding on to it longer.

I believe this is something that will be addressed next season as Romo has always been one to work on improving his game each off-season. Not to mention, since he is older now, he realizes his mobility and escapability are in decline and his body is not as strong as it was so it will be better for his health short and long term to throw the ball away once he goes through 3-4 reads and finds no one open. This is no different than an aging baseball player learning to not make the throw when the runner is almost on the bag since there is very little to no upside and an increased downside potential of a bad throw or other runners advancing on the throw.

That said, I have been very happy with how Romo protected the ball this season. There were a number of plays where he held the ball 5 or more seconds and made outstanding plays that most everyone raved about. If that meant he got a few more sacks, it was worth the trade IMO. The only reason I hope he starts throwing the ball away more next season is to help him take less hits and reduce his chances at both minor and major injuries.

The back to back Suh sacks were on him. The last sack in GB was on him.

The Cowboys were ranked low in pass blocking on the Football Outsiders metrics

Have to get better. Think Smith will always have some trouble against better rushers. Leary got ran over on one.

Good post. I agree whole-heartly.

I have zero complaints about how careful Romo was with the ball this season. That kind of football will generally get you to the playoffs.
