Cowboys overall performance over the last decade

How have the Cowboys performed over the last decade (from 2015-24) in some of the most important measurements like regular season wins, playoff appearances, and playoff wins?

Here’s how we measured up in the last decade from 2015-2024:
  • Regular season wins and losses: 93-71 (.567)
  • Won the NFC East 4 times: 2016, 2018, 2021, and 2023.
  • Playoff appearances: 5 times: 2016, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023.
  • Did not qualify for the playoffs: 5 times: 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2024
  • Playoff record last decade: 2-5 : Wins in WC round, 2018 and 2022, losses in WC or divisional round 2016, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023. (.285)
Overall, we won about 56% of our regular season games and 29% of our playoff games. We qualified for the playoffs 50% of the time, and won the division 40% of the time. We never earned the right in the playoffs to be one of the best two teams in the conference.

When I look at the Cowboys over the last decade I see a team that is above average in the regular season, makes the playoffs about 50% of the time and does not perform well in the playoffs. We have been a top 6-8 team in the league at times but not better than that.

Anything else?
 
When you look at it that way it doesn't look too bad in the grand scheme. I'm not sure what the takeaway is as far as the present goes, though. It might have more meaning if there was a management to evaluate and hold accountable, but that's not the case here, so from a fan perspective I'm not sure what the value is in looking back more than a season or two.
 
The Cowboys have been a different team in the regular season than in the playoffs. The team tends to peak about mid season then begins to fade the second half of the season. We’re still able to win games but the wins start to become ugly. By the time December arrives the cracks are starting to show and we limp into the playoffs. We’re never playing our best football when the playoffs arrive.

Looking at coaching eras in Dallas is probably a better metric.

A well balanced team is the key to success in the playoffs. We do not have a complimentary football team, it is as simple as that.

The entire league is aware we have a good pass rush, maybe even better this year. Everyone's game plan will be to run the ball against us.

3 of the 5 missed playoffs occurred when QB1 missed significant parts of the season 2015, 2020 and 2024...we probably would have made the first 2 if Romo/Dak hadn't been injured, 2024 was questionable given how we played before Daks injury.

Well balanced is very important in the playoffs.

Some games your offense - even a really good one - runs into a tough defense matchup and needs our defense to step up and get stops. Some games when your defense can’t get stops the offense needs to be able to score and at least put pressure on the opposing offense. It’s “complimentary football”.

Examples in the playoffs recently with teams that won championships:
  • 2020 Buccaneers - Tom Brady’s last championship was not all him. In fact in the NFC championship game that year at GB, Brady threw 3 INTs. The Bucs defense saved the day twice inside the red zone giving the team a chance to advance despite the bad game from the GOAT.
  • 2023 chiefs - Patrick Mahomes is clearly the best QB in the NFL now. But despite his greatness and the great chiefs offense, it was the defense that kept them advancing in the playoffs. In the AFC championship game at BALT, the offense was sputtering and only scored 17 points. The chiefs D held Lamar and the ravens to 10 points. In the SB against the niners, the chiefs offense punted 4 times in the first half and only mustered a FG right before half. The D held SF to 10 points and gave the chiefs offense a chance to wake up in second half.
There are other examples but I don’t want to belabor this. You can’t win in the playoffs without all three phases of the game being capable of covering for the others because not every phase is going to be great every game.

Also think it's a mix of talent and coaches figuring out our weaknesses without a counter. Mix of a team just taking advantage of something they noticed on tape, Rams with our defensive line giving away the gap they would attack, or just facing a stout 49ers team that could just stifle the offense before any rhythm could be established or just the Packers being the only team showing up for a playoff game.

Our two wins the past decade have been against a Tampa team that had an finally aged Brady and a Seattle team outside of the Legion of Boom. Two teams that you could say Dallas beat just due to better talent, moreso than X's and O's

McCarthy I don't think was bad, just a guy outside of his peak/fire as a headcoach. Didn't really see anything too much different from the Garrett era.

Peyton Manning pretty much just handed the ball off and won a SB in Denver.

When you have a soft schedule during the regular season, it shows in the playoffs.

Then you have a strong regular season and we don't make the playoffs.

Fans choose to see and believe what they want.

Your record in the regular season is meaningless.
 
If it makes anyone feel better, when Dak is the QB he is 78-51, a .605 percentage. Among all the QB's likely to start Day One, here is how the Top Ten in winning percentage stack up:

I don't know if that's sad or good......because the playoff record is nowhere like that smh.

Shocked Romo's is that low. Felt like we won mostly when he was healthy......

I believe our 10 year "decent" regular season has been artificially better because of Washington and NY being so terrible for most of those years.

What's our win loss if you take those 4 games a year out over the 10 years?

I suspect sub .50.
 
Dak also played in a terrible division for more than half of his career. His stats are misleading 100% of the time. He’s been a huge reason why the franchise is stuck in mediocrity.

The answer is simple. They beat up on bad teams and get exposed by the good ones.
