Cowboys plan on franchise tagging Osa

Like this team hasn't wasted picks on d linemen in the past, what makes you think they could find 3 in 1 draft...
Jerry has somehow convinced a portion of the fan base that they can just draft players and plug them right onto the roster without losing a beat. The Cowboys are actually a pretty good drafting team, but the expectations around the event have just become unrealistic. Two starters in seven rounds is typically a win most years.

I'd rather roll the dice doing that than paying proven mediocrity like he's a franchise player.

Newsflash. This team isn't good enough. You don't change that by bringing everyone back.

I agree with the philosophy here, but the issue is the guy set to take up 32% of the cap this year giving mediocre production. Paying a guy 7-8% of the cap shouldn't be a huge deal and wont kill your season if he gives you average play.

These guys are incapable of doing things right. The ham handedness with contracts is definitely the doing of that ruddy faced Nepo Baby.

If you don't see anything wrong with paying a guy 20 plus million a year for 3.5 sacks and 7 TFLs a season while being a negative run defender then I don't know what to tell you.

Prescott sucking has no bearing on this.
Cowboys paid the tee shirt king $20 plus. He averaged about 5 sacks a year as a starting DE. They can dole out some doozies.

How does it give him leverage? Players typically hate the tag and it’s a negotiation tool for teams.
The only leverage would be the entire $25 million goes against the cap this year. No way to mitigate it. Cowboys aren’t exactly in great shape cap-wise, unless they get restructures done on some contracts. That has not happened, yet, and free agency starts in less than two weeks.

Lol, like letting him walk right over to Washington and leaving us with needing 3 dtackles is a good idea.
A better idea than flushing away £25m of cap space. Could pick up a good DT in FA for half of that.

It’s also a deep class of D linemen in this draft.

I THOUGHT WE WERE "CLOSE" to a deal, now we have to tag him, I guess things aren't as close as they were days ago

The issue is no one is paying interior guys for sacks and TFL these days. Interior guys are simply not getting them at very high rates, I'm not even sure if a single DT reached 10 sacks this year. NFL.com has OSA 14th in all of defenders in total pressures, PFF has him 24th.
Average time to pressure in 2024
OSA - 3.02 seconds
Parsons - 2.74 seconds
Jalen Carter - 2.68 seconds
Milton Williams - 3.09 seconds
Quinnen Williams - 3.00 seconds

Average time to sack in 2024
OSA - 4.56 seconds
Parsons - 4.80 seconds
Jalen Carter - 4.85 seconds
Milton Williams - 4.94 seconds
Quinnen Williams - 4.60 seconds

You can go on and on forever, but all the data seems to indicate that OSA is nowhere near the elite group, but is right in with the next tier. Ed Oliver had some of the best pressure numbers among DTs this year and only had 3 sacks. He also never hit double digit sack numbers until after his rookie deal, similar situation with a guy like Javon Hargrave.....always had good analytic numbers but didn't show up on the stat sheet until he had his breakout year in Philly. There is simply some randomness around sacks and it takes a complete team effort.

OSA signing something in the low 20s is still about 30% lower than top pay at the position. Unless he is playing hardball for more I dont see the issue in bringing the guy back, no.

I'm just not sure the Cowboys care that much. Honestly I think this just benefits the Cowboys in that it gives them an excuse to not spend as much this offseason. When you look at it like an owner, and a cash hungry owner at that its not the end of the world if you have to tag him. Is it worse for the franchise? Absolutely. Jerry saves a ton of money that way though.

Well, it does say right in the tweet "if a long-term deal is not reached by Tuesday". And the Cowboys might reach a deal and not have to tag him.

Remember, that close stuff was being reported on Thursday by Fish whom we don't trust.
