I have done that for years with DTV, This year they would do nothing for me at all so I switched to Dish. When I call DTV back to get my refund they incessantly try to give me all kind of deals to come back. I must have been trying during a period that they were not giving deals anymore. I don't understand them at all!
That's weird. They'll usually bend over backwards to keep people from switching. All of their costs are already sunk, so they have nothing to lose and everything to gain by giving discounts, etc.

I know - been with them 17 years. Over a period of 2 months I tried everything to no avail....

Are you still under a commitment before you can cancel without paying a penalty to cancel? If so, that may be your problem (I, too, have been with them for 17 years). If you have a penalty for early cancellation, it will depend on how may months you're still obligated. If it's only a few months, you should still have them over the barrel. I've been quoted various amounts (ranging from $10 to $30 per month penalty) for cancelling early. The deal that just ended for me had a $10/mo penalty and the package I just got today has a $30/mo penalty. I don't plan on cancelling within a year anyways, so that was no big deal to me. That said, the less the penalty, the easier it is to threaten to cancel early if you choose to go that route.

No, my contract was done. They were even asking me if I wanted to go ahead and cancel when I called threatening to go with Dish to get discounts.

I have been on the phone with them twice since trying to get my refund. They kept me on the phone for over 15 minutes each time offering me $200 and free Sunday ticket - I had to get really rude with them to get them to shut up and find out about my refund - It is all really irritating because by giving up DTV, I gave up my NYFOX and LA FOX channels forever! I rarely missed a Cowboys game when I had 3 fox channels

I did it differently this year, after football season, and to help out a neighbor who works for Spectrum, I switched to spectrum. I told Direct TV they had gotten too expensive when I cancelled. Within a month Direct TV was calling to get me back. I held out for about 3 months and the calls kept coming. Since I was not on a contract with Spectrum, I finally got serious with Direct TV, they gave me the ST max, the movie channels, sports package free for one year, on a 12 month contract. They also came out and installed brand new equipment. Plus I got a $200 check from Spectrum for switching to them.

That's strange. I've never had an issue when calling to get a better deal. Like I said earlier, I've gotten ST free for the last several years, and gotten a good discount off of my regular deal, to boot. It may simply be a matter of the individual you happen to get connected with. I've been courteous, but firm, in my conversations with them and have never encountered a rude or uncooperative attitude from any of them.

In the past I had difficulty getting the discount too, but for the last few years it has been easy. I think it's easier to continue the discounts once you get them that first year. Just be sure you talk to someone in customer retention. The other employees are not authorized to give discounts.

I will tell you it seems to get tougher each year

I think you just have to find the right person to get it free

see I have a speech problem so I like to use the computer

I finally got the right person to get free

I told them I want to cancel - like Laudry fan said an Boyzmamacita

but dam took me two hours to accomplish

one guy kept on with the discounts I said no I want it free

then got off for a while

tried the phone that was useless

the tried the computer again done in five minutes

it looks like we've set the NFL Sunday Ticket to renew in 1 payment of $281.94 and you were given a one time $46.99 credit today for the previous installment you were billed. Then the agent's supervisor credited the $281.94 for you to make it free so you have not been billed anything for the NFL Sunday Ticket

Another thing, technically DirecTV cannot give Sunday Ticket to you for free because of the NFL contract so what they do is give you discounts that total or exceed the price of Sunday Ticket (unless you're a new customer - they can get it free).
