Yeah, it seems like Leary is our weak link. Some stats just don't really mean anything. I don't know.

I read somewhere here that Leary was garbage.

He's a good run-blocker. But he whiffs a lot in pass protection. Still learning his craft and will improve? Very possibly.

Either way, we're definitely better running over the left side than the right, which typically isn't the case.

We've run a whole 10 times behind Leary, so one or two long runs could really skew that average. By comparison, we've run 62 times behind left end, 44 times behind left tackle and 48 times up the middle.

I say they should try 11 and 12 this Monday, just to see if this stat holds water!

Lots of stats don't mean anything. Usually people will try to justify a player on stats alone and it simply doesn't work that way. Stats can reveal a lot but they can also hide a lot too.

The Dallas Cowboys are ranked 27th in rushing yards in the NFL with 1,021 yards, and their 249 rushing attempts ranks next to last in the league. However, they lead the NFL with an 8.6 yards per carry on runs behind OG Ronald Leary on the left side, and when they run toward OT Tyron Smith, they average 4.73 yards per carry.

not a surprise.....Smith isn't a good run blocker: noticed that the last two years. BUT...he's a heckuva pass blocker which quite frankly in this league is more important: VERY happy with Leary, just hope he can stay healthy

actually its run blocking that takes time to learn moreso than pass blocking. Smith is getting better; give him time.

If we had like 60 rushes behind him and we still had an 8.6 YPC, then that stat would mean a lot. But since it's only 10 carries, it's a skewed and flawed stat that's not really telling much. For all we know, on the other 9 carries he could be averaging like 1YPC. Too small of a sample size to mean anything.

I'll note that Football Outsiders ranks DeMarco Murray as the #1 RB in the NFL by their rate stat (DVOA). What's amazing is that after this week, he may also rank #1 in their counting stat (DYAR), despite many fewer rushes than any of the other leaders. He was #3 before this week and topped their list this week (see here), Those numbers are rushing only: they don't include receiving, where he rates out as middle-of-the-pack.

Not really. They have the Center help to the right but rarely to the left in pass protection. They do this in order to allow the RG to keep a closer spacing to Free than normal. This allows Free to over-set to the outside. This has contributed to Free's improved play while leaving LG Leary (the 1st time starter) on a island almost like an OT.

Normally, when a team has a 1st time starter at LG and veterans at RG and RT, they would give the young player as much help as possible with the Center; however, the Cowboys are having to cover up their weak link, Doug Free, at the expense of the young player.
