I think people forget what front half of his career Jason Witten looked like on the field. I wasn't thrilled with the Schoonmaker pick when it happened but the more I watch of him the more I do see a younger Jason Witten. Schoon is slightly smaller and slightly more athletic, but once we account for a game with more emphasis on speed than when Witten came out they probably match up well size and athletically compared to the rest of the league.

Schoon seems to be set up physically to run great option routes and who better to learn from on those than the guy who extended his career about 5 years longer than it should have been due mostly to one option play that he perfected. From the games I've watched (mostly 2022 Big 10 games) of Schoon he seems to be a plus receiver against zone coverage (need to be better against man), and has a natural ability to find the holes. Running the same Y option play Witten made famous could allow Schoon to thrive, but I think the guy currently can also run up the seem as well as run excellent crossing routes. I'm not sure that he's a complete receiver yet with a full route tree, but seems to have enough to thrive early on, especially if teams choose to play a lot of zone coverage against the Cowboys which they did often in 2022.
