Cowboys: Jenkins, Scandrick To Split Right Corner

CBS 11 Sports has learned that Cowboys coaches have sat down with cornerbacks Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick Thursday, telling the two players what the plan will be at right corner to start this season.

Jenkins and Scandrick have been battling since May for the starting position.

The plan, as the coaches told the men, is that they will alternate the two each week as the starter. The players will be platooned through the season.

During the 16-game season Jenkins will start for the team in week 1 at Tampa Bay. Scandrick will start against the Giants in the Cowboys home opener week 2.

CBS 11 Sports talked to both after the coaches decision Thursday. Scandrick called it a good solution, Jenkins said "they want to keep the battle going apparently."

Both were told that if one of them gets hot and does particularly well the team will use that player more.

Assistant Secondary coach Brett Maxis says they didn't feel it was fair to name a clear-cut starter.

The Cowboys are in Minneapolis for their final pre-season game, against Brett Farve and the Minnesota Vikings. CBS 11 will carry the game live Friday night at 7 pm.

Wow.

Just talked about this on DCFanatic Radio the other night with Bryan Broaddus because I remember Brad Sham mentioned it during the 49ers game as a pssibility.

Broaddus said Sham is definitely in the know so it could happen.

I don't know how I feel about this decision just yet.

Eh. I'm fine with it til someone really separates themselves. If it becomes obvious that one is a lot better than the other, I doubt they'll keep doing it.

Not too surprising. They want to use Scandrick in the slot, this will allow them to do that and get him some additional reps to keep him happy.

Bingo. One of the two will make more mistakes and basically bench himself.

It sounds kind of unusual, but the truth is that we don't know what either of these guys will do under the pressure of full-time play -- how is their concentration when when they have to focus every single down, how do they react to getting picked on, etc.

But I'm sure it will sort itself out before too long.

LOL

So Jenkins gets to face the Buccaneers and Byron Leftwich, but Scandrick faces Eli and the Giants.

I'm kidding. Just thinking X's and O's on this.

I have no issue with this. As long as they both play hard, make plays, and do their jobs I don't really care whose the actual starter or not.

I wonder if Newman will follow Antonio Bryant around.

I think so, as well. One will start to shine a bit brighter than the other and make the decision by play.

Has a week by week alternating happened on our team before? It may have but my tired brain just couldn't come up with an example.

Both need playing time as starters, so I think it would be a good idea to get them experience just in case something does happen, if nothing else.

The game-to-game plan isn't bad, just as long as they don't knee-jerk during a game and pull whoever's starting if he makes a mistake or if the backup makes a good play.

We've got two young corners neck and neck, so reward them both for their play.

I think I'd rather face the Giants receivers but with the Bucs QB throwing the ball (although Eli can sometimes look like the Bucs QB).

Better than rotating during a game.

Can either guy field punts? I know Jenkins returned KO's at SF

I like it. Both will have to focus if they want to be tagged as the true starter eventually. The play on the field will sort itself out. I'm a little surprised Jenkins first...I'm partial to Scandrick but I think it works. It is a good problem to have really. Too bad we didn't have more of that type of pressure/problem at other positions. More guys would stay focused on plays. I'm thinking Flo and his damn false starts here.
I mean both guys seem to have been knocking themselves out to prove their the #1 guy so I disagree that the coach is a sissy for not choosing an outright guy. I guess the only thing you'd hope wouldn't happen is that when one of the two does get tagged as the regular starter that you don't lose the intensity of the guy who falls to #2.

I like that the Cowboys are allowing performance (and not draft position) determine who gets playing time.

I would rather be Scandrick in this situation. Buccaneers have better receivers, and Eli is a good bus driving QB at best.

I disagree. I think Ball is decent. He is not good, but he is decent and can hold down the nickel corner spot.
