Developmental DT project.

Height: 6'3

Weight: 301 lbs

0:47 mark is definitely a late hit/helmet-to-helmet though.

OVERVIEW

Football took a backseat in the life of Ivie in April 2015, when he rushed home to be with his younger sister, Jordan, after a car accident. He was holding her when her heart stopped. His younger brother, Andrew, was meant to play with Joey the past two years at Florida, but was forced to give up the sport for medical reasons. In spite of all of this, Ivie has been a strong contributor for the Gators. After playing three of the team's last five games as a true freshman (three tackles), he was a key reserve upfront in 2014 (one start, 24 tackles, three for loss, sack). Ivie was a part-time starter as a junior, starting five of ten games played, making 27 stops, four for loss and 3.5 sacks. He capped off his career in 2016 with his best season, starting 10 of 11 games while battling a thumb injury (26 tackles, 3.5 TFL, 2.5 sacks).

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS
Plays with good motor and energy throughout the snap. Plays with flexibility and desired athleticism on the move. Punches into blockers with good placement. Locates the ball quickly and works off his block to tackle. Active as a pass rusher attacking both shoulders of the blocker. Plays with quick hands in his rush and uses arm over to get over the top.

WEAKNESSES
Lacks mass in his lower half. Attacks upfield with a narrow base and struggles to maintain balance through contact. Gets roughed up by double teams and combo blocks and pushed out of his gap. Doesn't feature upfield juice to consistently disrupt in the gaps. Relies on motor over power and explosiveness. Doesn't make many plays despite his activity. Short arms limits his ability to control at the point of attack.

DRAFT PROJECTION
UDFA

BOTTOM LINE
Ivie doesn't have the power or mass to handle run-stopping duties at the point of attack and he is lacking the length teams want from 3-4 defenders. Ivie is a try-hard player who can eventually work himself into a favorable position, but he lacks the desired traits to produce on the pro level.

Brugler had him as a UDFA, seems like a 1T that Marinelli can work with on a Practice Squad year:

SUMMARY: A former four-star recruit, Ivie had no shortage of offers out of Pasco, committing to Florida over Florida State and others. He took his redshirt off late in the 2013 season due to depth issues and steadily saw his role increase the next three seasons, seeing snaps at nose and under tackle. Ivie became a full-time starter as a senior in 2016 (10 starts) and posted 26 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and one forced fumble (missed two games due to a broken right thumb). Despite meager production, he is well-liked in Gainesville for his consistent effort and practice habits. At his best, he can shoot his hands to snatch, shed and pursue the football, disrupting the rhythm of the backfield. But those flashes were too infrequent on his fame film. He plays with adequate quickness, but his momentum is too easily slowed due to poor pad level, short arms and average functional strength. Overall, Ivie is a serviceable body with reliable character, but not a playmaker.

From a Shrine game writeup

Joey Ivie, DL, Florida
Joey Ivie is the other Florida defender who reportedly stood out in practice and stood out in the Shrine game. The first thing I notice is the energy that Ivie brings. Tons of energy from this kid.

As far as his play is concerned, his power and get up out of his stance is really nice. He seems to be about equally talented against the run as he is getting to the quarterback. He probably projects to be a 5-tech in the NFL.

Rotation guy.
Chew clock on offense and keep the defense fresh with multiple players rotating.
Of course they do not lay a team's foundation with 7th rounders, but he can sub in while others take a break from the action.

7th round. No biggie.

Would rather have taken a shot on Jarron Jones from ND. More talent but needs a kick in the pants.
