Cowboys should go Defense with #9 pick

Mike Lombardi likes Dareus over Fairly because of his explosive quickness and power. ...Said he was similar to Sapp. I agree with him.

The other guy, Steve Wyshe?, liked Fairley and compared him to Ratliff.

Dallas already has Ratliff. I perfer Dareus who has more power and can play NT and DE. Dareus gives you a bigger, stronger presence inside at NT.

Having said this, they both are top 5 players, and I'd be surprised if one fell all the way to 9.

I think Dallas' short list will look like this:

Peterson
Dareus
Fairley
Smith

I think for the offensive linemen to win, those four guys have to come off the board. Plus, Garrett and Houck have to put their foot down, imo.

I like Jordan at DE, but Smith is the better player. He straight up blocked him as a 20 year old junior and is still growing into his frame and getting stronger. I don't like J.J. Watt or Prince Amukamara at all for the Cowboys.

Steve Wyche (the other guy that I was talking about) gave Dallas Anthony Castonzo at 9 and talked about the big need on the offensive line. Dareus and Fairley went in the top 5 and Peterson went at 7, but Lombardi stated that there was no way that Peterson would fall that far. He thinks he's the best player in the draft and teams need CB before that range.

Also, Fairley will play at 23. Dareus is younger. Castonzo will play at 23, but Tyron Smith will not turn 21 until December. Solder and Carimi will play at 23. Sherrod will play ata 22. Ijalana will play at 22.

Dareus turns 22 in November.

Lombardi would take Peterson at 1.

Wyche mentioned Eric Berry as a huge impact player worth a top 5 pick when talking about Peterson.

The last CB to go number 5 was Terence Newman.

Lombardi used the word "improve" when talking about Colombo, Gurode, and Davis, or those positions. I'm watching it over and over. LOL

I thought he said "replace" the first time. He may have used both. :) I'm pretty sure he stated that Dallas needed to start looking for their replacements, when I saw it first. Again, he left out Kosier.

I'll tell you what surprises me.

It's that everyone on this board isn't viewing OL as our only logical course in this comming draft.

I have yet to read one poster who agrees with either of these statements:
1) Our OL is a good unit. Or at least good enough.
2) The Cowboys have invested enough draft picks/resources in the OL in recent years.

All we need to do is trade down to a spot we feel good about selecting Smith.
Perhaps down to the 15 to 17 range and pick up perhaps the 47th selction in RD 2.

If we over shoot and Smith goes off the board at 13-14, so be it. We trade down again and go for Carmini. Or take him at 17 if we think he's worth it.

It's just that this draft is extremely heavy in defensive players and extremely light in OL.

If there were 4 for sure OL like there are Fairley, Dareus, Peterson, and Amukamara and there was maybe one DL or CB that was rated highly, then we all probably would be talking OL at #9.

As it is though, we have a bushel of defenders to choose from and one guy (Smith) who might be worth a top 10 pick.

It is simply trying to get the best player we can verses getting what we need in a reach.

I really hope that Dallas finds a way to get Fairley, Dareus or Peterson and then uses some ammo to move up from the early second to the late first to nab a OT like Carimi or Castonzo. That would be ideal, IMO.

I won't grouse at all if we take Tyron Smith, A. J. Green, or Julio Jones there.

But Peterson is the guy I think we should target and if not him then DL not OLB.

i will certainly grouse if we take a skill player at 9. all the skill players in the world do you no good if your QB is flat on his back or running for his life.

:D

I like that a lot.

There's no way I'd draft the best CB In Peterson & then move him to S just because we desperately need a S. That would be a waste of good talent. If we get a chance to draft Peterson w/o trading up, he plays CB. I'd draft a good young S or OL in the 2nd & 3rd rounds. Ideally however, I'd trade the 9th pick to move down & pick up another 2nd rounder. We should be able to pick up a good young OL later in the first round, S with our 9th pick in 2nd round & a promising DL with late 2nd round pick. There should still be a promising CB in the 3rd round or an OG/C who can really help us.

I'd also hope we will have FA & be able to address the S & OG positions that way.
