It's perfectly fine to suggest that Bethea isn't worth the price, but to suggest you can just go out pick up a player who will go to 2 Pro Bowls in his first four years in the NFL like you're picking one off a tree is a bit of naive simplification of the inherent gamble of the draft process. If finding Pro Bowlers was that easy in the draft, particularly for this franchise, we wouldn't have had a 13 year playoff drought.

And if finding good safeties was so easy, it's hard to explain how this franchise has been without decent safety play for about 8 consecutive years.

It's not that hard, since 2000, we've invested a 1st, 5th, ufa, and 2 one-year contracts on the safety position.

You aim low and that's what happens.

You people who love to throw that uncapped year thing around you realise that the NFL won't be uncapped forever...right?

So you can go around throwing that idea around but what happens when they put a new cap back in place and you're no longer under the cap? All those high priced, shiny, FA you just couldn't live without this year are now gone cause you had to cut people to get back under the cap.

Now I don't think signing Bethea is a bad idea, or one that would crush our cap when it eventually comes back, but some people around here seem to think just because this year is uncapped it means that Jerry should just go out and sign anyone and everyone with talent at positions we need and say "Hey no cap."

That's Washington Commanders type thinking and even they seem to have learned from that mistake this year.

my bet is that we have a good working relationship with his agent, so we are "showing interest" to help his agent get him a good deal in Indy.

all this is moot, I hope and think jerry doesn't throw away a 1st rounder. Much rather go after Atogwe for free and a fraction of the price. That 1st rounder is very very very very important.

So was Miles Austin.

I don't see how Austin supports your stance, fact is he was undrafted.

And for every Austin, there are two James Martens or Jacob Rogers - or Pat Watkins for that matter.

I would much prefer a known commodity over an unknown.

Miles Austin was unknown until this year. In fact everyone fretted when we cut TO because they thought we had no one else at receiver.

You even wanted to bring in Matt Jones because you were afraid of the unknown.

i don't think we could pull Bethea away and really don't want to lose the pick when Atogwe has no compensation

I'm not saying that!!

A FS isn't going to determine if we win the Super Bowl or not.

Your mindset that we have to have Bethea is exactly why we're straddled with Ken Hamlin's enormous contract. Paying free safeties enormous contracts is an enormous blunder.

There's no mindset that the team has to have Bethea, just that the move would make sense on many levels.

It wouldn't guarantee a championship but it would give us better play at free safety than we're getting which should help the entire defense.

What's your cap on winning a championship?

How much is too much, especially in an uncapped NFL?

A 1st and probably another pick for compensation, not necessarily a 3rd, plus a huge contract for a safety does not make a whole lot of sense to me.

Just because the cap is there, doesn't mean you have to use it.

OK. Now I see the point you were making.

But again, I'd prefer to use the #1 pick on a known commodity rather than an unknown.

And it's not my money and there's currently no cap so finances wouldn't be a big deal to me either.

While I really like Bethea, it would really suck to be sitting there in the first with no draft pick and have a Brian Bulaga or Anthony Davis take a tumble.

both very unlikely to happen, but I guess stranger things have happened. But yes, that would just drive me crazy.
