Cowboys Sign Former Browns DT Perrion Winfrey

One more thing. Watch Baldy's Breakdown of the Eberflus scheme in Indianapolis. Then watch Winfrey's hustle, attack, lateral movement in this video. This is a different scheme up front where they're taking angles, running stunts, shutting down lanes, attacking the ball.

He might be a fit. I see him as a run defender to start with some developmental pass rush potential.

OK, OK, I'm going to bed now.

Right, but I thought we'd keep some competition for camp. We have Mazi and Toia as our only two NTs. Odighizuwa, Thomas, Winfrey, Akingbesote and Daxon are all 3-techs. Both Daxon and Akingbesote may be able to play both, though, Akingbesote is 6-3, 306 and Daxon is 6-2, 304.

Seems safe to assume Toia makes the 53 now. Figured he would anyway, but now his main competition for backup NT is gone.
For now. In Flus system the 3T holds importance so adding Winfrey makes a ton of sense.

I just don't believe we will go into season with just Mazi and Toia there will be another on PS at least.

yeah, but you are not going to build a team based on UFL players who couldn't make it in NFL....
Make a team, no. No one is suggesting that. But add talent and fill roles, Dallas is showing you absolutely can.

Voch just did a video on Turpin in pass game that cleared up some misconceptions about Turp as a wr he's doing one with his RB carries.

It really highlights how crappy McCarthy was last year.

Shotty will use him more in both roles.

Aubrey clearly a difference maker.

Josh Butler while not great did provide some depth and flashes last year. His knee injury sucked for him, but all things considered he played well when given opportunity.

Winfrey wasn't brought in to be all pro starter. He was brought in to provide a rotational piece at one of the 3 most important positions in the Flus defense.

Does Rochell play in the slot?
This is question I have too. But really this signing was a true churn bottom of CB roster. I don't expect anything out of the player and I didn't from the one they cut for him.

JAG after JAG...just turning the bottom of the barrell looking for diamonds...
Yes. We have 90 roster spots at this point. It would be stupid to search for a guy like Winfrey who played really well last year in the UFL.

That roster spot needs to go to an extra punter or kicker to provide competition!!!

I cannot believe this board that I have been with for so long is now overrun by idiots making stupid posts.

The thing I will concede to you is that the guy absolutely has plus lateral movement for an interior player. He also looks like a darn bull coming off the ball sometimes. It makes it easy to fall in love with the guys natural abilities for sure.

Now to be fair this is his rookie year in 2022, but In watching his NFL film I'm seeing too many major issues with some but not enough flash to make up for the negative plays. He seems to be on the ground quite often, plays straight up and down with high pad level, only plays the man in front of him (horrible on double teams), has shown almost zero ability to read blocks, and has no feel for rushing the passer. On his pass rushes hes essentially a guy with just a bull rush that keeps resetting his hands and shuffles his feet side to side. That typically tells me a players brain is not processing whats going on in front of him quick enough. Instead he just plays everything off the bull rush and shoots gaps. That can have value, but when its the only tool in the bag it gets defenses in trouble as well as offenses will use that aggressiveness against him.

I'll for sure give the guy a fair chance to be evaluated this camp, but for the reasons listed I also think hes a JAG until shown otherwise. His film reminded me a little bit of Mazi Smiths rookie year. You see enough natural athletic ability to want to stay stubborn on the guy, but its hard to be confident that the production will ever be consistent enough to match the measurables.

I forgot to add potentially. Just watched some of him in the UFL where he played 1-tech. I thought I remembered Cleveland playing him at 1T and 3T, but I could be wrong about that. In college, he played everywhere 0-5.

One thing to remember, he's only 24. Maybe it clicks, maybe it doesn't but I'm rooting for him to be good because he had potential at Oklahoma. Hopefully he's done doing dumb crap now and wants to make some money.
I just can't believe we have 50 posts about a guy who "has potential and was good in college"

That describes every player on every roster in the league. The 9th best wide receiver on the Jaguars team right now, whoever that is, was a really good college player, a great athlete, and has "potential", and COULD be great one day. We're talking about the Jags 9th best WR right now...except that he plays DT and is on the Cowboys.

Please continue this long thread about the Jags 9th best WR. It's a good one.

I admittedly do not know the differences between Eberflus and Marinelli’s approach to run defense, but Eberflus was here when the Rams ran for 250 in a playoff game with a RB who was on his couch 2 months before the game.

All the stunts were leaving wide open cut back lanes teams knew to exploit. How will this be different?

100%. This is why players who can't do multiple things well on the field are going to struggle to play at the NFL level. The lateral agility of this guy is legitimate, but when all he has in his tool bag is the ability to shoot gaps and move teams can take advantage of him just like they did during the game you mentioned.

It's like a baseball pitcher who has a good curveball, but thats the only pitch thats any good. We need guys who can do multiple things well in order to keep offenses honest. One dimensional approaches gets us in trouble far too often.

DT Perrion Winfrey in, Justin Rogers out (again) surprises me tbh.

Makes me also wonder how short of a leash Mazi will have this season and will he be a Cowboy next season, considering this regime drafted Jay Toia.

My point is Jerry fills the team with JAGs in FA and Scouring UFL and ignores FAs that can make a difference like a plague. The Cowboys nation celebrates when we sign anything that has semblance of talent. And every few years maybe twice a decade when the team is really sucking it he makes a splash move like Cooper or pickens...

Thisnis not how you build and win a championship.

And I will hold out judgements on schotty. Everyone is just hopeful at this time. Let's not forget schotty was on the staff last year.

That release should embolden Mazi. There is nothing but young guys after him on the depth chart. Two of them (Akingbesote, Daxon) were college 3T's.

Polarization. Player either sucks balls or he's the next coming.

Yup. Goes back to the fact that we are absolutely horrific at player management. Any DT that shows any sign of life, Jerry pays him big right away. His inability to evaluate players makes him pay players he shouldn't.
