LB Carlos Polk, who played for Wade Phillips in San Diego, is now a Cowboy. He takes the roster spot of WR Sam Hurd, who was put on injured reserve after undergoing ankle surgery.

The 6-2, 262-pound Polk, who is an eight-year veteran, was a special teams standout for the Chargers. He led San Diego in special teams tackles before suffering a season-ending shoulder surgery.

Polk, who arrived at Valley Ranch this morning, said he can play any of the LB spots in Phillips' scheme. But his biggest impact with come on the Cowboys' special teams, which obviously need all the help they can get, especially if LB Kevin Burnett (calf) can't play Sunday.

"I'm just going to do what they ask me to do," Polk said. "I don't know anything yet. I'm just going to go with the flow."

Polk? That's great.

Like Mr Cowboy said, you almost wonder why he wasn't already on the roster, except that he's old.

Next to Thomas he looks like a spring chicken.

hopefully he can alternate getting hurt with burnett

Cowboys placed WR Sam Hurd (ankle surgery) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Hurd took a step back this season, but mostly due to injuries. He is an efficient, useful player and excellent in kickoff coverage. Hurd will be a restricted free agent in 2009 and is almost certain to be tendered.

Cowboys signed OLB Carlos Polk, formerly of the Chargers.
Polk can rush the passer some, but will mostly play special teams.

Good news regarding Carlos Polk because of the special teams aspect... I don't think Hurd will make the team in 2009.

Can I say here that I still wish we'd found a way to keep Walden?

You could, but Walden wouldn't contribute today. He is a project player.

got to like a guy who rebuilds classic cars with his pop.

he seems a great fit as an OLB special teamer.

Probably a better special teamer than Spencer so it may be a small upgrade considering Spencer never got much burn in the defense.

Sounds good. If the guy can come in and contribute on special teams right away this is a nice addition.

I thought we would sign polk in august.

He is a special teams ace.

Hopefully he can come in and help this special teams unit asap.

It's going to be a race between him and Stanback for their spot next season. I'd say, going in, that Hurd will have a pretty solid advantage over IS in that regard.
