STRENGTHS
Features a devastating jump-cut that torments defenders in space. One of the best "make-you-miss" types in this draft. Improvisation-oriented athlete in space. Able to change directions at a moment's notice and multiple times during one play. Great vision. Looks past first move and focuses on second move. Instant burst through the crease to the third level. Ran for 15-plus yards on 13.6 percent of his carries over the last two years. Can be shuffled around the field as a mismatch weapon. Was a kick returner for all three years at A&M.
WEAKNESSES
Very slightly built runner. More of an "offensive weapon" than a true running back. Ran as an off-set back from shotgun. Is seen frequently looking for the sideline with ball in his hands. Little to no strength as a runner. Can't break tackles and churn out extra yardage. When defenses get hands on him, the play is over. Too small to be factor as pass blocker. Benefited from running out of spread offense, allowing him to see his share of six-man boxes.
DRAFT PROJECTION
Round 6 or 7
SOURCES TELL US
"He will have to prove to NFL teams that he can work from the slot, too. If he can show that he has value from the slot to go with an occasional carry and full-time kick return responsibilities, then he adds to his value." -- NFC East scout

Seems like moreso of a Dunbar type if he can see the field than a true running back. It makes sense since we already have two guys that have feature back attributes.

Nice, looks like a guy we need to get into open space.
4.45 40 time. Not a slow dude per say.

So, might be used more on special teams to start.

Might activate all of them if he ends up being the FT kickoff player. Apparently they trust Smith more than Michael to spell McFadden on passing downs.

They need to make one of the RBs a kickoff player. They couldn't do any worse.

Trey had 70 returns in three years at Texas A&M for 1684 yards with a 24.1 yards per return average. Maybe he's our guy to get us to the 20 and beyond.

Yeah, he'd have to provide special team value to even warrant being active.

Sit Clutts, Have smith play some FB, as he can be a threat to run or catch also.
Use Williams as the Dunbar role player. As well as return guy option behind Whitehead.

um, with little to no blocking skills, i would have to think this is a bad idea.

The #Cowboys are signing RB Trey Williams from the #Commanders practice squad, source said. He takes Joseph Randle's roster spot.

Looks to be a "Dunbar-style" back

STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES
STRENGTHS: Jitterbug athlete with loose hips, rubber ankles and natural fluidity. Quick-footed with the plant-and-go burst to dart through the line of scrimmage and get north-south. Sudden shiftiness to pull a rabbit out of his hat, showing nifty moves that can be tough to contain, especially in space. Eats up grass quickly with very good speed for the position, mixing his gears well.

Small hands, but usually reliable catching the ball out of the backfield. Reliable on short-yardage plays - 10.4 average (16/167/1) in his career on third down and less than two yards. Experienced kick returner with a career 24.1 average (70/1,684/0) - also played on other special teams coverages. Only 242 career offensive touches with no major injuries, limiting the wear and tear on his body. Excellent yards per carry average (6.6) over his career. Well-liked by everyone in College Station.

WEAKNESSES: Undersized with a frame that appears close to maxed out - narrow torso with lean muscle. Lacks the build to run with functional power and won't consistently break tackles after initial contact. Won't generate a push between the tackles and needs space to be effective. Vision is lukewarm and doesn't always trust what he sees or show faith in his blockers to create space.

Was never the bell-cow option in college with only one 100-yard rushing performance in 36 career games and one start - has only five games on his resume with double-digit carries. Didn't return an punts at Texas A&M. Small hands and wasn't asked to run many routes or be a large part of the passing game - unreliable in pass protection with limited upside in this area.

--Dane Brugler

PLAYER OVERVIEW
An all-purpose weapon, Williams was underutilized in college as part of a committee backfield the past three seasons at Texas A&M, leaving College Station averaging 6.6 yards per carry over his career.

He boasts controlled twitch to make explosive jump cuts, effortlessly shifting his balance to make defenders miss, even in tight spaces. But his lack of size, power and offensive identity are concerns and project him as more of a luxury weapon for an offense, who can impact the game as a return man and change of pace option out of the backfield/slot - mid-to-late round option due to questions about his NFL role.
