So one contract in 10 years and that guy played out and started his entire deal and never missed a game..... the horror

Carr never came close to living up to that contract. He was paid like an elite corner and was a liability most of the time he was here. No DB we had got called for more PI’s than he did and he only came up with 6 INT’s in his five seasons with the Cowboys. He had only one INT his final three seasons with the team. He never improved our secondary. We hung onto him because Claiborne was having injury issues and wasn’t panning out and we were desperate for corners.

Carr had his contract restructured more than once and may have even taken a pay cut. We overpaid for other free agents besides him but not to that extent. Benson Mayowa was another free agent who didn’t pan out. This is a big reason the Cowboys haven’t been big players in free agency the past few years. They want to have money for their own players who’ve performed.

The problem is that they have the money for their own players if they want them back. They could have re-signed Hitchens if they really wanted him but he clearly got overpaid so they decided against keeping him. That was a smart move by them.

The reality is this team could add a couple of mid-level FAs and still have money to re-sign key guys already on their roster.

But they don't. They use the cap as a crutch to justify their slumming around in FA signing the likes of Carroll and Moore and others. The funny thing is, all the homers defending them for bargain shopping often talk about how it's smart that they don't overpay in FA but in reality, they have and likely will continue to overpay for the slum talent they do get in FA. They clearly overpaid Carroll, for example. We are taking a dead cap hit on that clown.

And that's the flaw in the logic that this is about fiscal responsibility. It's actually simply negligence. They just don't know how to work FA and trades in their favor. It's really that simple.

They would’ve had to overpay Hitchens to keep him. Look at the contract he just signed with the Colts. We would’ve had to re-sign him for more money then Sean Lee is making. He’s a good player but he’s not worth that kind of money. We can’t afford to be overpaying players when we have to re-sign Martin and possibly DLaw if he has another big year. Those two are going to command top dollar. Overpaying for a player like Hitchens could cost us one of those players. The Cowboys are not going to allow Martin to get away. It’s going to take a couple of Brinks trucks to re-sign him.

They are so bad at picking FAs that they have adopted this ******** strategy....... they think dumpster diving if preferable to 'buying championships' like the old days

It has been the philosophy since Jason became HC can they should give priority to those already on the team who were great contributors. This makes sense because they are a known commodity and questions are are already answered about their productivity in the system, how they relate to teammates, their coachability, etc.

The greatest contributing factor to the improvement of a team is not the acquisition of new players but the progress of the ones they already have when it comes to familiarity with the system and their fellow teammates, increased experience from the previous season, and their personal improvement goals set by coaches and trainers.

The Cowboys can sign some expensive veterans but they will not contribute more than guys like Lawrence, Martin, and Irving. You will see radical 2nd year improvement from Switzer, Charlton, Awuzi, Jordan Lewis and Noah Brown.......as a group.

Therefore, the Cowboys are only interested in great value from their veteran free agents or a last minute signing as the result of injury.A veteran free agent would have to show the potential to do amazing things over the next 3-5 seasons for them to even be considered for a huge contract and you will rarely see this because teams like to keep their best players from going intro free agency. If you do see it then you can bet there is some baggage attached to the guy and that will probably eliminate him from consideration.

Again people aren’t talking about signing a high level vet FA to a big contract for the next 5 years.

we haven't given priority to guys that are already here because Martin isn't signed beyond this year and neither are Irving or Lawrence.

since its all about the cap space, how did philly just sign mike wallace? how are they continuing to make moves in FA?
