Cowboys' success in 2016 will again rely heavily on DC Rod Marinelli
http://www.si.com/nfl/2016/06/30/cowboys-defense-rod-marinelli-rolando-mcclain

As the Dallas Cowboys learned the hard way again last season, Tony Romo is the figure most critical to their success. No. 2 on the list might be defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli.

The Cowboys are built to win with offense, with Romo now surrounded by Dez Bryant, Ezekiel Elliott, Jason Witten and a punishing offensive line. In the 2014 season, when they captured the NFC East and came one controversial call away from the conference title game, they were averaging nearly 30 points per game, paced by 1,800-yard rusher (DeMarco Murray) and Romo, who put together arguably his best NFL season.

But not to be overlooked in that division-winning effort—and it wasn’t by those paying attention—was the work Marinelli’s defensive unit put in. Without any obvious stars, Dallas’s defense finished in the top half of the league in points allowed, holding every single opponent under 30 points and half of their foes to 20 or less. It was some of Marinelli’s finest work...

After having a historically poor defense when it comes to forcing turnovers in 2014, being without your two top defensive ends for the first four games will not help with attaining the goal of getting more pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

Pressure typically leads to the offense making mistakes. It doesn’t take a NFL guru to understand the correlation between pressure and turnovers. If the Cowboys want pressure in the first four games, it is going to have to come from players other than Lawrence and Gregory.

There is a little bit of a silver lining in this suspension-laden cloud. This will give defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli opportunity to evaluate the defensive ends behind Lawrence and Gregory with increased snap counts coming their way.

This situation may pay dividends down the road, with players getting the chance to gain valuable regular season experience. Ryan Russell, Benson Mayowa, Charles Tapper, David Irving, and Jack Crawford are the likely names that will be competing for the starting defensive end spots to start out the year.

They should build of statue of marinelli and place it in the stadium. He's always asked to perform miricles with junk given to him.

Hey rod we got you some practice squad guys from other teams, a couple of late round picks, and a guy who wont play this year. Go make it happen buddy. Clap clap clap

Marinelli runs one of the most vanilla schemes in pro football. He's not some mastermind coordinator who tries to outsmart offenses.

His scheme is 100% reliant on having disruptive players along the line. Hope like hell that Collins and Tapper turn into something because the current cast of available vets we're deploying is a sad bunch.

Im tired of Dallas having coaches like that, we never try to outsmart anybody. We just line them up and say go beat them, and the worst part is thats our philosophy on offense and defense.

cowboys 2016 success will rely entirely on tony romo if he is out its all over. Rods defense couldn't figure out how to get a critical stop or turnovers last year.

Y'all are being pretty rough on poor Rod. He inherited the worst defense in the entire league. Other than Byron the only key additions he's been given are suspended or on pup. Jerry did allow a lot of other bodies with potential, but no obvious starters or difference makers. I'm hoping Gregory becomes that guy, Jaylon has a full recovery & the others excel. Unfortunately I think we're still a couple of drafts away from becoming a dominant D. Hopefully the offense is still firing on all cylinders once they get there.

You learn that at the burn barrel?

Turn overs were lousy...as was offensive production levels without Tony Romo.

More specificly, with the game on line and in fourth quarters.

I don't have the actual numbers in my head, but I think the Offense smoked the D on the turnover count last season.

Since when does the success of any team in the NFL not rely on either of their O or D coordinators?

The HC, player talent, health, schemes, identity and cohesiveness of the team top to bottom?

The success of the season does not just rely on a DC. Everyone needs to step up in conjunction with all the variables already mentioned.

No. His scheme is reliant on players knowing their assignment. He believes assignment-sound football is more important than complex schemes.

To some extent, he is right. A mediocre NFL defensive end has a better chance of succeeding when he is allowed to just be a "rushman." Take away read and react and allow him to just attack and it can make someone who would be a washout in a different scheme be serviceable.

However, confusing offensive blocking schemes can be just as effective or more, although it often puts you in poor positions on defense if the blitzes, etc., don't work, which is why Marinelli doesn't like to use them. He believes in playing sound football that allows his players to play without having to think too much.

Personally, I beileve with the personnel we have, we need a coordinator like Marinelli. With better personnel, you can mix it up more without it being as much of a risk because great players can overcome mistakes.

Only thing that really gives me any optimism is that the defense is largely the same as 2014's over achieving bunch, but with a few additions. Gregory wasn't on the team so no loss... sean lee was out, and he's back. We've added Lord Byron, Tapper, Collins, and Thornton, and D Law being suspended is essentially his injuries in the first half of the 14 season. So while looking at the defense and wishing there was more in the cupboard, or remembering how poor they were last year and looking at the subtractions it's easy to be pessimistic. I'd say if the offense can get back to jumping out in front and controlling the TOP, our D in theory should be able to produce similarly to 14. Also one thing to remember about that year is that it was all doom and gloom about the defense prior to the season after releasing Ware etc. So hopefully we can have another surprise season of folks stepping up.

I think Marinelli is too old to play DE or LB imo

Most of that is his doing, though. He's the one who wanted the Golden Cock here.

what coach out there will perform miracles by taking problem players who can't stay on the field, rejects from other teams and late rounders? Coaches can only do so much.

I was t impressed with his unit's work last year. And his 'Rushmen' have finished no higher than 26th in sacks since he's been here.

And the 'bare cupboard' excuse doesn't add up for last season, when they got the top pass rusher available in free agency and the best prospect in the draft and it still didn't make a difference.

If the results continue, eventually you have to wonder if it's the coaching.
