Cowboys talked about Gallup in second round?

Sounds like they might have tried to trade up slightly had it been Vea that slid instead of James.
For a brief second I thought V was gonna make it to us, but I am not sure they would have taken him if he did. They seemed pretty set to get LVE. I did think JJ would have taken the risk with Hurst.

Gallop would have been a horrific reach even at 81 since wasn't even drafted

Luckily we went with Gallup at 81
lol. Yeah Gallop would have been a reach. :D

The only regret is if Gallup can't play the X.
Actually Gallup can play the X. He can make 50/50 plays with good leaping ability, good hands and high-pointing skills. He's a physical receiver for his size too with a little "dog" in him. His height (6 feet) isn't all that short. He's not an optimum flanker, but he can play it.

Years ago Dallas thought about drafting Jason Witten in the 2nd but instead took center Al Johnson. They were able to get Witten in the third.

I'm talking like 100 years ago, but yeah it happens. It was a real shame, too, because Witten turned out to be such a progress stopper.

Needs more dog.

Glad they took him in the 3rd, 2nd round tight ends never work out for us

We think he can. I hope he can at the pro level.

Hall of Famers tend to do that.

If you want a real culprit, it it is the two TE offense thing.

Yeah it is a big deal

Ten years later..twill is still on the roster..and still can't catch
Ten years later? I was saying big deal cause it doesn't matter about Gallup either. Doesn't mean he was worth a second round pick and doesn't mean he was a steal. Most likely he will be a JAG and not much more TWill was.

Even if that's the case, it would mean we valued Gallup over Anthony Miller (No. 51), James Washington (60) and D.J Chark (61). Of course, as others have pointed out, it easily could be a case of Dallas trying to make its choices look better.
I think the difference between a second round receiver and a third round receiver is the protection a QB gets. Cowboys did it right in taking C. Williams first.

The only reason Chark went in the 2nd round was his speed. He's a reach.

So either Dallas is overestimating the value of these players or other teams are underestimating them.

We discussed Gallup in the second and he was still around for our third-rounder. We thought about trading up into the third for Armstrong yet he was still around in the fourth.

If these picks turn out great, the scouting department deserves a lot of credit for recognizing them as being better than their value to the rest of the league. If not, Dallas needs to take a close look at why it's valuing them more than the other teams in the league do.

Every team has gems they got too, not just us. Some teams may have taken him off their draft board or place a lesser value on him base on their current wr core, scheme, height, among others. Think about it if we wasnt looking to shake up our core I doubt a top 100 pick would've went on a WR.

This is from DC.com:

Sometimes staying put is the best course. On Day 2, the Cowboys had cursory discussions about taking wide receiver Michael Gallup at No. 50. They didn’t and got him in the third round 31 picks later. Saturday, their first pick in the fourth round – Kansas defensive end Dorance Armstrong – was a guy they thought about trading up for Friday night late in the third round. They stayed put again and ended up drafting Armstrong, a talented edge rusher who posted 10 sacks two years ago, later than expected. With the extra fourth-rounder they didn’t have to give up for Armstrong, the Cowboys selected versatile Stanford tight end Dalton Schultz, who can help replace some of the dirty work James Hanna did for the last several years. (Rob Phillips)

To confirm this the DC.com writers posted a mock Thursday around noon the day the draft started, David and Rob both had them taking Gallup in the 2nd round:

I think we got everyone about where they should have went except I thought Conner Williams would get picked between 23 to 36. He slid down further than I expected.

We also were trying to trade into the late 3rd round for Dorance. That's what all the fuss was about in the war room when McClay was banging on the table.

I was joking...

They might have talked about Gallup in the second, but I don't think he was ever considered there very seriously. From what I heard on this board, the final decision was between Williams and Justin Reid.

The Dorance Armstrong trade up kind of sounds like fake news to me. I heard the Cowboys were trying to move up back into Round 3, but Armstrong just doesn't seem like the kind of guy they'd do it for. They spent a lot of time in this draft hammering needs and Armstrong wasn't a need.

Guess we'll need another leaked draft board to see if it's all true or not. Let's make it happen, Jerry.

I have nothing but some experience in PR to believe this, but I fully believe that the talk that Armstrong was the guy we wanted to trade up for is BS.

It was shown on the war cam that they were working the phones late in the third, and it immediately became common knowledge that they were trying to trade up. That cat was out of the bag and the question about who it could be was being thrown around. This is question that would not go away.

The most common thought at the time was that they were trying to get Tavarius Moore or Harrison Philips. We are suddenly off the phones, and both those guys go off the board back to back. We stay off the phones and done trying right after that.

So how to spin it without sounding like they lost out?

Just make it sound like it was for the guy they got anyway.

I get why they are lying. The in house (DC.com) reports have been given instruction to back up that lie up for the next few months to try to make fans feel like they got some sort of steal. Everyone wins. They look smart and the fans are happy. If I was crafting stories with the Cowboys, I'd be all for making up the story.

Armstrong may work out for us and I have nothing against the pick, but that story is a load.
