Cowboys talked with Trey Lance last year regarding a contract extension

It was probably a marketing plan to get rid of all of those unsold Lance jerseys sitting in boxes.

Let's not lose hope that they will let another team sign him in the next few weeks and then they can trade for him again. They work 365 days a year at upgrading this roster.

Yet another huge McCarthy blunder. Just add it to the list.
Once they resigned Dak they had no interest in seeing Lance with the starters.

If he sucks then they’re fools for trading for him.

If he was great then they’re even bigger fools for signing the loser Dak.

They like the idea of not knowing better. Ignorance is bliss.

if Lance would have showed at least something of a decent QB, it could have held up negotiations for a few more weeks lol

I'm not sure McCarthy had much of a choice. Honestly this is exactly why it was a terrible idea to let your coaching staff all play out their deals. With McCarthy and his entire staff about to be free agents the development of young guys starts to go out the window.

Spot on observation!

I'd lean heavily to McCarthy didn't have the power to even make that decision. I remember that press conference where he basically stated he wished he could have played him but Jerry made him clean that up later on

Very possible. Jerry is the one doing radio shows every week talking about who and why they were going with Rush. I would hope its McCarthys call, but we are all guessing.

Why get him to come back when you only let him play the LAST game of the season!!!!!??? He's better off playing in that other league he's in, get some game film, and maybe that'll help him be a little something decent
It's a awkward process by FO.

Don't play him so he won't gain value if he plays lights out well and there be a free agent highest bidder for him ?

Yet we supposedly traded for him to be able to play and develop into a very capable backup pass a physical limited cooper rush ?

Yeah, Trance's potential is so great, he has yet to get picked up by another team after almost a month into free agency. So many QB moves, trades and signings have happened, but not for Trance.

We all saw what Lance was and wasn’t. He was an excellent QB on the run. He was terrible making decisions and throwing the ball.

They wouldn’t even give him a chance with the starters.

It’s like they were scared to death that he would either suck or be great, so they didn’t want to find out.

They’d rather let Cooper Rush play and ruin our draft position because he can’t help but win games.
Lol!
