Cowboys talking mostly defense at NFL Combine

I think Alex Carter and Jalen Collins could surprise #27 as well if there is run on CB's in the 1st round.

I can see them reaching for CB at #27 regardless, if Carr doesn't restructure. Carr may be a June 1st cut anyway and doubt Claiborne will be ready for TC. A player like CB Ronald Darby or even FS Gerod Holliman for example could surprise at #27.

I sure as hell hope not.

Same here.

I think they have enough need on Defense that they would not have to try and single it down to DB and reach for one.

On a side note...wonder what the chances are that the Washington DB is in the box or still on our board when it comes draft time.

Two question:

1. Do we assign grades to our roster players that allow the team to compare them to possible draft choices or FAs?

2. If there are 16 draft choices with first round grades in a typical year, how many second round grades do we hand out?

1. They do have the scouts and coaches grade the players are the season. I don't know that they compare them directly to draft picks, but I don't know the exact details of the process.

2. I've never heard an exact number on the 2nd round, but I get the impression that it is always less then 32. The were the leaked draft boards a couple of years that are floating around somewhere. At some point (after 2009) they started making their draft board much smaller. In the past they had something like 240 prospects on their board. After the change, they averaged something like 120 prospects on their board. With the smaller board you will miss out on some good players but the number of busts or bad picks should be less. The smaller board allows them to really dig in on the players they like. It's one of the reasons that they tend to draft a lot of guys that come in for visits or guys that they spent extensive time with. The OL coach had a 1-on-1 workout with Fred before that pick. The WR coach and some other staff spent significant time with Terence Williams before that pick. On the flip side, they didn't have any contact with Claiborne prior to that pick. They didn't expect him to be an option. The Claiborne pick and the Floyd ordeal caused Ciscowski to get demoted and Will McClay was promoted to run the board.

I think the only D players worth a first rounder that could, be on the board will be Marcus Peters, Michael Bennett and Alex Carter

If you are looking for a DE, you are getting an Adrian Clayborn level player

SERIOUSLY hope Dallas is in a WIN NOW MODE for the Draft because that is the reality of the QB situation.

They need to address any Win Now issues in free agency. They need to go near-BPA in the draft. Their biggest need is a pass rusher and getting great production from a rookie pass rusher is a low probability, especially at #27.

Thats why I cant wait for free agency 3-4 weeks from now we should have a much clearer picture on what teams needs are in the draft.

I'd like him but I don't think S is on the menu.

Safety, DT and LB should be available and coveted as the main course. Improve the Defense up the middle in the Draft, improve the outside rush in Free Agency.

You may have a point with reference to the outside rush in free agency, unless you are trading up, assuming no one falls, the quick twitch pass rushers will be long gone in all probability.

You may still find something in the way of pass rush but not with elite characteristics in later rounds.

There are some mid to later round Safeties that are interesting. The Cowboys need a high upside developmental Safety, IMO.

Adrian Amos
Durrell Eskridge
Eric Rowe CB/Safety

yup......That's my exact thinking now that the combine is over.

And the guy I think it's gonna be is Wake Forest CB Kevin Johnson

Michigan State CB Trae Waynes ...will be gone
Washington CB Marcus Peters probably ...will be gone
LSU CB Jalen Collins...........scares me. He's got some seriously bad tape...even though he blew up the combine.

I really like Kevin Johnson. One of my favorite CBs in the draft. With that being said, I dont think hes a 1st rd pick or a high 2nd for that matter.

Either that are a Grade 1A ballhawking S higher in the draft.
