I think it is time (past time actually) for the Cowboys to take some plays away from Jason Witten and allocate them to Hanna and the other tight ends on the roster. Witten isn't the player he used to be and is really only a possession/goal line receiving tight end at this point in his career. Personally, I think he is being way overpaid as well, but that is just a side note. Using Hanna in Witten's place, with his speed, puts a lot more pressure on a defense and opens things up for other skill positions on offense..

This is where the timing of Escobar's injury really hurts the progress in this area. Hanna will be given the chance to be more involved in the passing game (give him opps,etc.). But Witten is a HOF TE and won't kick him off the team either but a 50/50 split in snaps should be fair to start; even Romo said he would be okay with a 1st RD QB, it's time for Witten to give a bit on taking all the snaps. Sometimes the third time ain't the charm (2nd RD TEs).

Throw out last year with the crap he had slinging him the ball, and you will see his average hasn't dipped much as he gets older.

No.

The problem is not solved by another pass catcher - plus the idea that Written doesn't pressure a D is absurd. He's really hard to cover. Even at his age he gives defenses fits.

The issue we need to deal with is that we get a giant drop off in blocking when he leaves the game. He's not the dominant blocker that Bennett was but he's the best TE we have at consistently carrying out his assignments. Take 10 snaps a game when he's blocking out and you've got him much fresher

Put Hanna in on the 3rd and long plays.. Witten is still a beast, just can't get yards after the catch

Witten is viewed with rose colored glasses by Cowboys fans. In retrospect if we had to jettison Ware or Witten we got it wrong.

Simple. This scheme isn't creative enough to give us mismatches , drafted Escobar to utilize two te's then realized Garrett rigid outdated plays don't give flexibilty

TE is the least of my concerns. Witten is still top 5-7 in the nfl

It is funny how everyone rags on Carr for his contract and gives Witten a free pass because of his past history. Witten doesn't suck, but one of the reasons why he is so open is because teams don't fear him doing anything with the ball once he gets it anymore. Him running in quicksand enables defenses to shade other players with coverage, with little to no consequences.

Last year he still had over 700 yards with putrid QBs throwing to him. Even if he's not a threat to take the top off a defense that's still damn good. You can add another 300 yards and probably 3tds had Tony been present

This again? I swear people will ***** about anything.

The TE position is way down the list of problem areas on this team.

The fact that you don't view it as an issue isn't conclusive proof of anything, except that we disagree about Witten's current worth to the team relative to his contract and how effective we each view him filling the starting tight end role on our team. Reasonable people can interpret the same facts differently.

Being wide open for first downs is a real consequence. You can't tell me defenses don't fear that.
