Cowboys to pursue Simms?
Chris Simms | Titans | Interested: Cowboys? Bears?
Tim McMahon of the Dallas Morning News is hip to Jerry Jones' game. Although Jones has said the Dallas Cowboys won't be looking to make a big impact by signing big name free agents this offseason, he's compiled a list of potential candidates to make the move to Dallas, and Chris Simms is one of the key players on it.

After Tony Romo sustained a pinky injury during 2008, the Cowboys were left with Brad Johnson as their starter and the team went 1-2 during that stint including a demoralizing loss to the the St. Louis Rams, who finished 2-14 in 2008.

Although the Cowboys had internal discussions about trading for Simms in 2008, no deal was finalized and Simms spent the season on the Tennessee Titans roster, alternating between the second- and third-string. Simms had his most productive season in 2005 when he completed 61 percent of his passes for 2,035 yards, finishing with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Also of note, Simms and Roy E. Williams, for whom the Cowboys traded in the middle of 2008, played together at the University of Texas.

I thought the idea was to upgrade the backup qb? The only upgrade is in age.

I'll take it.

I'd rather have Beck from Miami, but this is free, that requires a trade.

Send Brad Johnson packing.

I agree on sending him packing I was just hoping for a better option than Simms. He's better than Brad but only because of age.

Simms is an upgrade.

As long as he has returned to the form he was in when he got injured. He was well on his way to leading the Bucs to the playoffs that year.

He got hurt trying to get that extra yard.

I will never understand the dislike for this guy. He has never done anything to be disliked.

At the Senior Bowl practices before the draft, the guy stood and signed autographs and talked to fans and kids in actual conversations. Like the guy really gave a crap. In contrast to the other players there who were often polite, but in a hurry to get out of there.

Yet, for some reason, people hate on Simms for no reason at all.

I was hoping they would have done this last year if simms had anything left.

He could have spent the remainder of this past season as the number 3 learning the offense and not worrying about playing and going into this camp as the number 2 if he had everything down.

But I am in favor of a young veteran and a drafted qb. Oh and hoping romo never allows them to ever see the field.

I'd like to get Simms. The Cowboys need a veteran upgrade over Brad, Simms would meet that requirement.

In addition, the draft doesn't look very good for qb at all imo, although the Cowboys will likely select one.

I don't dislike him I just think we could do better.

You're joking, right?

You may not live long enough to see worse QB'ing than we saw when Romo went down.

Johnson not only missed our receivers when they were open, he threw it to the other team on plays where our receivers were open.

He stole money from Dallas, he did not earn a dime.

I'm not suggesting Simms will challenge Romo, but he would be way better than Johnson.

I was shocked at how bad Johnson played.

That's the difference. At least if Simms comes in, he has won games in this league and was leading a team to the playoffs when he got injured.

The real question about Simms is if he has fully recovered. His first year back he had lost all of his strength. This past season, most people agreed that he should have been given a chance to start, but Gruden was all over tha charts. It sounds like he has fully recovered.

I actually like Simms. And no, I'm not a UT fan... And I did think he was a huge choker in college.

But IMO he showed a ton of improvement at Tampa, which isn't too surprising considering UT's offensive coaches weren't the best. I'm still not sure why the Bucs gave up on him, other than Chuckie being a maniac when it comes to QBs.

Hope this rumor comes true. Simms would be good insurance if Romo got hurt again. He has a stronger arm and has starter ability. Jerry wanted to bring him in, but Parcells thought Chris would be under too much scrutiny in Dallas with the hound dog media and also the pressure of living up to everyone's expectations as Phil Simms' son.

Yes I saw him play but IMO just IMO Simms isn't a huge upgrade.

I strongly dislike Texas and I really don't like Phil Simms at all but I'd be very happy signing Chris Simms as our back-up. I still feel it was a mistake not getting him last year. Brooks Bollinger? Come on now...

What form are you talking about? The Bucs were not going to the playoffs the year Simms got injured. He started the first 3 games that year(2006) and the Bucs lost all 3. He got hurt showing toughness to get that extra yard, but he was playing terribly that year. His QB rating was 46.3. He passed for 1 TD and 7 INTs and completed only 54.7%. Those were his worst stats of his then 4 year career.

I don't hate Simms. Never have. I think he got treated unfairly by Longhorns fans while in college. Still I just don't think he is a good NFL QB. Right now he is better than Brad Johnson. That just may not be good enough for Dallas if they once again have to turn to their back up in 2009. If that is the best they can do, then they should sign him and send Brad on his way. I just hope they can do better and I will be hoping that Romo doesn't have to miss time.
