This is from June 15th

"I think he's probably the most improved player," Wilson said, according to the Dallas Morning News. "He has a greater understanding of the concepts, the protections, calling the plays, all those kinds of things. He's made a big jump this year.
"His confidence and his demeanor, his complete understanding and grasping exactly where he's supposed to go with the ball, handling blitzes and things like that, he's been very improved."

That was before he went 2-5 against San Fran in the preseason. He's good with all those things until the play breaks down or he's rushed to make a quick decision.

He did not throw an INT and given the pressure he was under in that game. He could have made bonehead throws he didn't and in the course was also knocked out of the game. I think people need to give him a chance to prove himself. Players can and do improve if given time. I don't expect him to play like a HOF I do think he has some very good talent and if the OL protects he can help this team. He is not going to improvise like Romo not many QB do and it will be important for him to get rid of it when plays break down as opposed to trying to make something out of nothing as Romo does. Weeden does not need to feel as if he has to carry this team, he doesn't. Play smart and the rest of the team will help

I'm not sure that's the standard I want to hold the QB, too. Like I said in the other thread, if I did not have what he did in Philly to go on, I wouldn't have any hope that he can prove himself.

I believe, they feel, they have to say that.

It was before training camp even began. They could have said it about Vaughn but they didn't. Weeden having a better understanding and have a better feel for what defense is doing is big because it allows the QB to play a bit faster and more relaxed

We can always hope. It took Tony until his 4th season to develop into the QB that Parcells turned the team over to in 2006. Weeden was pretty old coming out of college, but this is only his 4th year, so maybe lightning will strike again for the Cowboys.

When pressure is coming and plays are breaking down that is exactly what I want my QB to do, forcing it and throwing INT will get you beat quickly. Punting it and forcing the opponent to earn yards especially this season with this defense is the right move.

I tend to agree with this. The fact that those quotes are from June is significant. There was no real motive for anyone on the staff to make hollow statements hyping Weeden at that time. There was no reason to.

Weeden has looked ok in camp and preseason as far as I can tell. I'd considered bringing it up at the time, but decided it was not a battlefield I particularly wanted to die on, given what a whipping boy he's become.

He looked great on Sunday. If he can come in and make all the throws when he has protection and just throw it away when he does not, I'll consider that a raging success. To get through this stretch, we're going to have to have the rest of the team cut down on the penalties and on the stripped balls we've seen so far this season. We're going to score less, and Weeden won't be able to take care of the ball like Tony does, either, so other players are going to have to soak up some of those mistakes by making fewer of their own. I do think we owe the guy the benefit of the doubt for at least one more game, though. That AZ game was atrocious, no denying it, but he really might have gotten better, and we really aren't going to be playing a lot of defenses like that in Tony's absence. He might be good enough to get by with against teams that aren't actually contenders.

I would've liked to see a lot more reps this preseason.

Showers and Vaughn were wastes of time, imo.

Collinsworth was saying that because Romo takes so much practice time off during a week compared to other starting QBs, it allows Weeden more than normal practice time for a backup.

Hopefully it pays off. I just need him to be efficient.

Weeden does look better. From what I've seen he hasn't forced anything. Read coverages better. Been more decisive. Small sample size, but if he can do those things along with Dallas being able to run the ball and take some pressure off him and the defense forcing turnovers and holding teams down so we don't have to get in a shootout I think we'll be alright.

I agree, I would add given how the defense is playing, let them help you. Nothing wrong with punting as opposed to forcing passes. Make the other team earn what they get do not give them easy points by setting them up in excellent field position.

If they can get the rushing game close to last year with the defense we've seen. Then Weeden can just be a bus driver and we can still win most games.
