I will echo the thoughts that if Tomlin couldn't make it work with him, Schottenheimer has no shot.

Hed a 1k receiver in an offense that has had horrendous quarterbacking.

This type of talent is NEVER available for a 3rd if not for warts. Yes he has warts. But he also has All Pro talent. Id trade a 3rd for an imperfect human all world talent everyday.

I think there is a real possibility that this is a one year rental for Dallas. Suppose Dallas turns around and trades for a legit running back on top of this move, or trades for another receiver.

That move likely put Dallas drafting at or near the end of each round. If Pickens departs we essentially get a comp pick that would probably be significant (at worst). That makes the cost of this trade the difference between those picks.

We are fine at RB. But wouldn't be surprised if we went out and found a good db next. That's where we are sorely lacking.

Skill wise I dont think Pickens is really a #1 caliber player. Maybe a low end #1. But I think he has the skill to be a Tee Higgins caliber #2. If we can lock him in to a contract, I think its a good trade. We aren't likely taking a better player in the 3rd next year
