Cowboys training camp: UDFA star of the day is Jalen Moreno-Cropper (again)

The Cowboys returned to the practice field Thursday at training camp, and a familiar/unfamiliar face stood out from the crowd once again.

Having gotten an up-close look at camp, here’s what Nick Harris of dallascowboys.com had to say of young receivers second day at training camp

Myself, if he performs in preseason games I can see him replacing

KaVontae Turpin

Again…won’t make the team over one of the 3-4 JAGs at WR they end up keeping. Will get stashed, but picked up. Told you this two (2) days ago.
At least wait for it to happen before you say "I told you so". Jeez.

Really want to see him in preseason. He has a chance.
The preseason will be fun to watch because a lot of these young guys are good players and the qbs that are going to play are decent and know what they are doing.

Nice story, but When it comes to these UDFA WRs the most important question is “does he run down and tackle on kickoffs and punts“. If not, the odds of making the roster are incredibly long sans injuries. PS of course is an option.
If he continues to be a stand out in camp and shows up in preseason games, they’ll give him a hard look regardless of his ability on special teams. The key with him is showing up in games as a receiver.

Actually I dedicated an entire thread on this some weeks back. Looked at every UDFA over the past seven years. Only 1 immediate starter and a couple that became starters down the road.
Off the top of my head:

Steele
Charvarius Ward (traded to KC)
Beasley
Ron Leary
Barry Church
Miles Austin
Romo
Tuinei
Drew Pearson
Cliff Harris

Charvarius Ward (traded to KC)
Dan Bailey

Maybe (not 2023 udfas)
Hendershot was a significant contributor.
Malik Davis
M. Bell

Continues to stand out? It’s flag football right now. They haven’t even put shoulder pads on yet and it’s like day 3. If a month from now when we practice against other teams and have preseason games if he is getting raved about he has a shot to make the team IF he plays STs. Our top 3 WRs don’t play STs. Turpin isn't on kickoff and punt teams. You aren’t going to have more than 4 WRs active on game day that aren’t running down on kickoffs. Tolbert will likely stay ahead of him Which makes 5 WRs on the 53. If we keep a 6th he will be on STs. These bottom of the roster guys need to play STs and especially when they aren’t likely to get reps on offense.

Im rooting for the kid and all the other UDFAs and every year undrafted guys make our roster but they either have at worst a rotation role on offense or defense or play STs. Also we may keep a 3rd QB this year because of the rule change

If Moreno-Cropper keeps this up he will make the 53. Right now only 4 WR's are set in Lamb, Cooks, Gallup, and Tolbert (if only for his draft status). I think Simi Fehoku is on thin ice and Cropper can take his spot. And let's not put Turpin's spot in stone either; especially if Deuce Vaughn or even Cropper himself can show he can handle returns.

I’m just going by what’s been posted. It will come down to his performance in preseason games.

I think Turpin's spot is safe unless someone cuts his legs off. But that could change if someone has a preseason like he did last year.

My fault for a lack of specificity. While my thought process was pointed to WRs my prose was severely lacking.
I was thinking of Miles Austin and Drew Pearson when I was pecking about on my phone's keyboard.

Do WRs need Pads to show their abilities...

Oh there are some for sure. Romo, of course.

But this forum latches onto these UDFAs hard and fast, and it's more of a twice-a-decade thing that we land a real stud in UDFA. I keep my expectations real low. They aren't even in pads yet.

We'll see there are a lot of possibilities. But he's probably vying for 1 spot.
