You really think Aaron Murray is going to save the day if Romo gets hurt? If Romo misses a significant amount of time we go 6-10 at best and start looking at QB's with our top 10 pick next year and forget that a guy like Aaron Murray ever existed.

If Romo gets hurt, nobody saves the day. Orton will not make a difference.

I am more concerned about getting a head start on life post-Romo. If the cost is a mid-round choice, who cares? Is Matt Johnson or some other flop holding Dallas back? If you look at our history, we are more likely to take a shot in the dark than invest in the future and that is part of our problem when drafting. To be clear, I am talking the concept, not that I feel that strongly about Murray. I really do not have a great feeling one way or another.

The simple fact of the matter is developing a good young QB for a year is smarter than getting in the QB rat race in 2015 with a bunch of other teams knowing for a fact you have to have one. Even if you are fortunate to get a good one you are a year behind.

Unless the prospect is elite, it takes a couple of years to mold them. I would rather get started now than wait until panic sets in. And it most certainly will.

My point is that "molding" a 3rd/4th round qb is an extreme long shot according to nfl history. Meanwhile, the odds of a 300 pounder on either line being at least a useful rotational player are much higher in the same 3rd/4th round range.

I think that if the day comes when Romo retires and we don't have an option on the team, we will be trying to give away 300 pound lineman for a chance to get a serviceable QB. If Murray is worth a 3rd pick, we should spend it. I'd rather have him in the 4th but the evaluation is up to the scouts.

In last years draft at their second 3rd round pick, Ryan Nassib and Matt Barkley were the highest rated players on the Cowboys board. With 2nd round grades, they were rated well above the actual pick, JJ Wilcox. If a similar opportunity arises this year, they should take the QB.

Better do something with Romo's back, he won't be the same player. And I'm not sold on Weeden carrying this team or Orton for that matter.

I think Murray is already better than Weeden. I'd much rather have him as the heir apparent.

This draft definitely appears to have more a deeper QB class that recent drafts as far as qb's that have solid tools, numbers, pedigree, etc.. and could potentially contribute. What would be 2nd 3rd round prospects available in the 4th or 5th, much like the wr class. Is it a waste? who knows, but if the plan is to wait until Romo can't play and then use your first round pick, that's not much less of a crapshoot and is a much more severe transition process.

I keep asking this question, maybe someone can help...

What is the penalty (if any) for cutting Orton if we draft a non practice squad QB. I can't see us keeping four

Two QBs that could surprise people on how early they go are Mettenberger and Savage. Some had Savage going in the 6th or 7th round. I can see him going anywhere from late 2nd to 5th.

Thanks

So even if they cut him, the cap hit is still the dead money figure of 3.38 mil?

I wonder if they are keeping cap room for just such a move. They do have more cap room coming after June 1, but that wouldn't help pre-draft.

I don't honestly know DFW. I think the Cowboys are hoping that either Orton decides to retire or that if they do take a QB, whomever they take shows well enough that they can release Weeden. His cap hit would be relatively cheap if they cut him before he makes the team.
