Problem is none of our up and coming players really fit this role, unless Wilber is the real deal. I like Crawford, but I don't see him as the edge rusher that I would like to see in a Cowboy uniform this coming year. Since we are running a similar D to Seattle, we really need an up and coming guy like they have in Irvin to fill this role, but as of right now this guy isn't on our team so a vet to fill the role would be a great addition.

Yeah, that's how I see it. At this juncture, I don't see Crawford as being a guy who's going to bring consistent pressure as a 4-3 DE. I don't think his first step is quick enough. I could be proven wrong and would luv to see him be the guy that replaces Spencer, but I just don't think he is.

Sorta the same with Wilber.

I think we're going to have to rely on the draft come next May.

Well I can see Crawford in the role of Red Bryant more than I can see him as an edge rusher, although he has more ability to get to the edge than Red does of course. I do see Crawford as a starter next year to replace Spencer cause of the role that Red plays in that D, just saying we don't have an Irvin on this team at this point.

I do agree though, I see us going after that edge rusher in the next draft. Wilber is really our only hope on the current roster to fill this role.

It's a shame though. I actually like this guys long term potential. I get the feeling we'll see this guy on some team's roster in the next year or two down the road. Wouldn't be shocked if it's ours.

He had microfracture knee surgery. Many players never come back after having that procedure.

I think Crawford can help and play SDE but right now I don't see him as a big time pass rusher. He does have very good strength.

Ahhh. I had forgotten it was that serious. Well yeah that's a traumatic blow for the guy. I thought he showed a little something and had nice size. His size will probably lessen what are already bad odds from coming back from micro-fracture.

I'm more concerned about who's going to be able to provide fresh pass-rushing legs at DE than I am the reserves at DT.

As of right now I don't see that pass-rush specialist on the roster... BUT maybe one of the young guys will shine. But personally I'm thinking that come next May (when the draft is held in 2014) there will be a couple picks used for DE.

They should do the opposite. Rest Ware and Spencer on 1st downs or 1st and 2nd downs and short yardage situations. If Crawford were the only backup, then it could be similar to the following:

Snaps played on run-type downs:
25% of Snaps: Crawford at LDE, Spencer at RDE
25% of Snaps: Crawford at LDE, Ware at RDE

Snaps played on obvious pass rushing downs:

100% of Snaps: Spencer at LDE, Ware at RDE

If there were 100 total plays and 20 of them were 3rd downs, then:
Ware 20 + 80 * 75% = 20 + 60 = 80 total plays.
Spencer 20 + 80 * 75% = 20 + 60 = 80 total plays.
Crawford 80 * 50% = 40 total plays.

Ware 80% total plays, 100% 3rd downs
Spencer 80% total plays, 100% 3rd downs
Crawford 40% total plays, 0% 3rd downs

That's not a bad plan. I just think you're going to see Wilber get some of those snaps.

The Cowboys have had some players in the past that had the micro-fracture procedure. I don't think any of them played another down in the NFL.

Yes, I was just trying to make the math easy for the example. I expect Wilber to get snaps also. There's an outside chance that they also keep Sheffield as a 5th DE and 9th DL; although, at this point if they keep 9 DL, I expect that spot to go to Hayden.
