NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the Cowboys will likely explore signing Tony Romo to a long-term contract extension this offseason.

He's slated for $1 million in 2007 base pay, and Dallas is ready to put its future in his hands. Romo, who threw 19 TDs and 13 picks after taking over for Drew Bledsoe at halftime in Week 7, is currently at the Pro Bowl. Feb. 10 - 5:08 pm et

No wonder I can't be a sports reporter, I'm just too lazy to do all the work it took to come up with stuff like this.:bang2: :bang2: What's next "The Colts have decided not to release Peyton Manning"?

If we engage in a deal with Tony Romo, we have to be "safe". We have to really know that he's our start for sure. I would like to see us sign somebody like Jeff Garcia to "up" the competition. Give Tony Romo a challenge and who ever wins the spot haves a valueable back-up just in case one go down.

Thoughts?:starspin

CFL All-Star Ricky Ray would provide Romo stiff competition. Matt Baker may too. Competition is always good.

I never understand the garbage "give him comptetion" arguement. If your naming someone a starter and banking your future on him, bringing in comptetion will only hurt his confidence and morale.

From an unbiased perspective, I think you guys should wait half way through the 2007 seaosn before handing Romo a long term extension.

The fact that Romo was an undrafted free agent who worked his way up to becoming the Cowboys' quarterback beating out multiple QBs from a potential first round pick if he stayed in school, to a potential HOF player in Drew Bledsoe, should put the "competition" argument to rest.

Tony has to get paid and jerking him around until mid-season is not smart at all.

Jerry doesn't like contract issues hanging over young player's heads. He'll give Tony a good deal and if he outplays it he'll tear it up and give him a better one.

I totally disagree with your first statement. If bringing in competition hurts his confidence and his morale, there is no way possible that he can be QB for the Dallas Cowboys, one of the most pressurized positions in professional sports.

I agree with your second statement, we should wait on an extension and sign during the season. I think everyone still has a question of whether he's the guy. No need to committ to him right now.

What's the rush? Tony started out like a ball of fire and even though the defense was our demise, Romo didn't play well down the stretch either. I still have the Seattle game on my DVR and for much of that game, he was horrible. Nothing wrong with waiting until he plays a few games next year to get a deal done.

What I think you are missing here is that if we wait until a few games into the season and Tony plays lights out, he may decide to let his contract run out and go UFA. In that case we a) may end up paying far more money and b) might LOSE him.

I don't know what you are talking about in the Seattle game -- he played an efficient game and put us in a spot to win. Had Witten and Glenn not lost fumbles that would have been a very different game.

Then let him go to UFA. Jerry has the money. I couldn't care less about money, it isn't mine. Jerry isn't known for low balling his players anyways. He may in the beginnning but he has no problem paying the money.

In the Seattle game, i'm talking about all the bad throws. I understood missing a few in the beginning but he missed guys a lot in that game. Sure he made plays but it definitely wasn't one of his better games.

Jeff Garcia has proven that he cant play outside of a WCO in this league.

As far as a Romo extension... Well didnt you expect it ?

Fans love him, media loves him, so pay him. Same thing happened with Vick.
