Cowboys Will Workout Top Kicker

I have watched him for several years and I cringed almost every time we went for a fg. His kickoffs are great but at time inconsistent.
I was looking for your commentary.

Thanks.

Maybe Jerry Jones and Bill Parcells are serious about making a run at the playoffs this season. Might not be a bad idea to have a backup kicker in case of injury among other reasons already mentioned.

I posted that we were going to look at him a few weeks ago and had a pretty good discussion about him. I can't find the thread though.

He could be a very good kicker if he can make the transition from college to the nfl.

i totally agree.... after the top 22 players (offense and defense) there are 23 spots left... Vanderjagt and a top young kicker, using 2 of those 23, wont hurt us 1 bit....

I don't know, Jimmie. last year when I was trying to figure out our final 53 for the season and who we would cut on the last cut-downs... I had a real hard time figuring out who to cut. This year will be even more difficult. We'll be cutting some players that have potential and can play in the NFL.

Someone like Beriault or Pepper Johnson might lose a roster spot because we have to have a kickoff guy. I'd hate that because I think those guys have a lot of ability that has yet to show. It may not be those two, but you watch... they'll be players that we have to cut that are well thought of around Dallas.

If McBriar can do the kickoffs and save a roster spot... that would be great and could keep a young guy with potential around for another season for him to develop.

The rookie kicker can probably play tackle better than Tucker. ;) So we wouldn't really be losing a spot, now would we?

It ain't a done deal yet. If a team is letting good prospects go it should mean there are no suspect players left on the squad. I have no problem with Jerry Jones or Bill Parcells taking a long look at every viable opportunity available.

No, cuz this is the Dallas-freaking Cowboys we're talking about here. EVERYBODY wants to play for us. And if they don't, it's cuz we didn't want them anyway...

:)
Tell it like it is!!!

Kicking in the NFL is much different than college but we'll see.

I agree and where you can keep 53 on the roster you can only bring 45 on game day so there would be 3 spots tied up with all 3 kickers. I hope Vanderjagt can show that is kickoffs are good enough so we don't have to waste that extra spot.

I saw this kid ina college position skills conted on ESPN, the kid has a leg and accuracy some pros wish they had. I honestly see this guy a 1st day pick.

Is that right? Well, too bad your team don't have any first day picks...the midget gave them all away for some mediocre bums! :lmao2:

I don't know. The more and more I think about it, I don't mind having a kickoff specialist if he can consistently kick touchbacks -- maybe at least 33% of his kickoffs. Say he does that, and kicks off 75 times a year. That would be 25 touchbacks. Would you make a roster spot for a guy that only plays special teams and can assure you of getting 25 special teams tacklets letting the kick returner going no further than the 20 yard line? I think I would. Longwell didn't kick many TBs, so the only kicker available who did that okay was Vianeteri who had 10. Surely there's gotta be a strong legged kicker out that than can kick the ball 70-75 yards. Who cares about his FG kicks.

While we're on the subject, anyone know why college kickers can routinely kick touchbacks but NFL kickers can't? Is it because of the tee?
