I would rather defer with most teams.

But this one responds better with a lead, and with the running game, it just sets up better. With this team, take the ball.

Are you kidding with original question? We've had the ball first almost all season because we always put our offense out there first, and other teams play into our hands by deferring. One team tried to mess with our mojo toward end of season by taking the ball first.

I don't think having the ball first in the second half is nearly the big deal most fans think. If you have a better offense than defense, you should want the ball to start the game before others make halftime and sideline adjustments, and controlling fourth quarter direction for your defense can be big in many stadiums.

Loser of the original coin toss gets first choice in the 2nd half.

Wrong, you can't get the kickoff in the first half and the second half, are you new to football? You either get it first to start the game or get it in the second half. Whoever wins the coin toss gets to choose if they want it in the first or second half the other team gets it the other half, they have zero say if they lose the toss as far as when they get the ball but they get to choose which direction they will start.

If what you said was true no one would ever choose not to get the ball first because then the other team would get the ball both halfs. I'm not sure where you got that idea.

When your offense is 2x as good as your defense, you take tha ball on the opener, that's what you do.

I hope this is your first year watching football otherwise you don't pay attention. When have you ever seen a team get the ball in the first and second half? You haven't.

Technically, you are deferring the choice on first coin toss. I'm sure it's never happened, but you could defer in first half, letting other team say, "we will receive." Then let's say you have the lead but a 30 mile an hour wind picks up. Second half you may choose to kick anyway. You aren't required to receive, but it would require a strange issue for you to choose to kick...maybe your QB had a sudden bout of diarrhea...haha. The weird part that I wonder about because it's never happened is after you say, "we choose to kick," would ref turn to the team who had no choice, and even though they will receive, would they also get to choose the direction? Interesting scenario that will probably never happen, and if it did, I'll bet my mortgage the NFL refs screw it up somehow.

Oh so you bring up a college game where the refs screwed up when we're clearly talking pros. Yes I'm so certain that's going to happen Sunday. Please just stop.

The refs didn't screw up.

If you are saying it's unlikely to happen I agree, but if you think it's not possible, you are wrong. Look it up.

Sorry, but that isn't correct. The winner of the flip gets the choice in the fist half, while the loser gets the choice in the second. When you defer, you defer your choice to the 2nd half. In theory, you could choose to kick in the 2nd half. I think it would be monumentally stupid to do so, but the rules allow for it. The only reason I could see for a team doing this would be wind-related, and you want to position the wind at your back in the 4th quarter.

Cowboys always take the ball. I like to defer.

Defering is weak. Take the ball and set the tone and let the defense be fired up with a lead when they step on the field. I'd never want my defense to begin the game on the field of a playoff game unless we had a historically great one and we don't.
