Cowboys OL Martin leaves practice with stinger
Before Tuesday's practice devolved into a brawl, the Cowboys were dealt another scare.
Early on in the afternoon's practice against the Rams,
Zack Martin went to the ground with an apparent neck injury and was quickly tended to by team doctors and trainers.
"It's for sure a stinger," said Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones. "We've got to obviously do a lot of work and make sure there's nothing more there. Hopefully, that's all it will be. It was obviously scary and something we were concerned about."
Martin didn't move for several minutes, and the injury was scary enough to draw concerned onlookers. Stephen Jones, Jerry Jones and Will McClay came over to monitor the first-round draft pick, and Martin's offensive linemates came over to express their concern.
Eventually, Martin sat up and was able to move his neck in both directions. He walked off the field under his own power, along with the Cowboys' medical staff. The plan is to further evaluate him for any other problems.
"We can keep our fingers crossed here, and hopefully he'll be fine," Stephen Jones said.
Even if the injury isn't that serious, it further complicates things for a depleted offensive line. The Cowboys are already monitoring several of their stalwarts on that unit.
Tyron Smith is resting a strained bicep, while Ron Leary is being evaluated for a back problem.
Doug Free has also been in and out of practice while he recuperates from a foot injury.
With Martin out of practice, the injury problems were evident when the Cowboys' first-team offensive line was manned by
Darrion Weems, La'el Collins,
Travis Frederick,
Mackenzy Bernadeau and
John Wetzel.
Martin will continue to be evaluated, but Stephen Jones said he was hopeful that the majority of the Cowboys' injuries wouldn't threaten their playing status during the regular season.
"As we sit here today, we don't know about Zack, but anybody we felt like is going to be a part of this team is going to be available for the Giants," he said. "We just have to continue to work in that direction."
