Martin's contract expires at the end of 2024. In 2025 he will be 35. He had his contract restructured a few times collecting millions in bonuses. This year he will get only $1.7 million in salary. Next year he is due $13 million in salary and another $1 million as a roster bonus. The Cowboys pushed about $9 million in bonus money into his voided years (2025 and 2026) The question is, what will Zack Martin be when he is 36? If the Cowboys think he can play that long and be effective, then why not extend him, throw him some bonus money now. Obviously, it is always a risk renegotiating contracts. If one guy does it you have to worry about everyone coming back for more money when they have a good year.
If they extend him out to 2026, and pay him a nice signing bonus, they can spread it out over 4 years to keep his CAP impact in a reasonable range. Since they are planning on extending other players, why not Zack too?
On the one hand I don't like players who sign deals then come back for more money while still in their deal. But Zack Martin could be in the HoF one day. The Cowboys have $20 million in CAP space now, why not extend him? Unless the Cowboys are planning on saving their current CAP space to carry over into next year when the will sign a few other guys, make Zack happy now.
