cowboyszone:Draft Notes: Smith Gives Dallas a Much Bigger ''Problem'' at Pick 9

Actually USC has a very good program if you are willing to put in the effort. Effort being the key.

Hmmm, thats not what I've heard. I heard their staff wasn't of the quality you would expect from USC.

This draft is slim on elite talent. I think this guy is one of the few in this draft. He is just entering the draft at least a year early.

If he can get to 305lbs-310lbs, I think he could be the Cowboys starting RT *THIS* year. (displacing Colombo)

With another year or two to develop, I don't think there is any doubt he would become the Cowboys LT for the nest 10 years after that.

I'm curious. If someone says they wouldn't take him before the 20th pick, who are the 19 guys taken ahead of him?

As of right now ? How do you want the list, based on talent, talent and need, or just need ?

Also, the history of the draft is filled with positive and negative outcomes. For example, its too easy to talk about a guy taken in 1989 and say this guy's going to be a bust just like so-and-so. No player should be judged by the past that doesn't involve him whatsoever.

That's not a smart thing to say. YOU, or anybody else for that matter, don't know how any of this players are going to turn out. All YOU, like everybody else, can do is make a possible guesstimate and if you don't take history into consideration, then you're a fool.

But hey, if you throw enough opinions on the board, eventually one sticks and you can call yourself an expert.

If you don't like it, nobody is forcing YOU to be here..

I don't think he could start at Tackle at all. His problem is size and strength right now. He couldn't handle the power of the NFL's Left DE's as a RT and he doesn't have the skills yet to start at LT so he'd probably have to sit for his first year. Although he could be great after a year of development. But is it wise to draft someone for next year at pick 9?

You are speculating. The kid is strong and will only get stronger. His technique on bullrushes needs a little work.

I think he damn well could start at RT this year. He is better today than any thing else we have at RT IMO.

I'm saying he played college ball at 285 and had a hard time keeping on the weight while the season went on. I don't see him being able to stay around 300+ while playing in the NFL. Too light for me sounds like the center we had a while back.

Ware played at 247lbs as a DE. He is now 262 OLB. All players can gain weight. The question is, can he gain weight and maintain his quickness and agility. The combine will help decphier that.

Ratliff has gained weight. He started as a TE at Aubrun. Ratliff was 275 coming out of Aubrun he's now 305. Canty was 279 out of UVA. He's now over 200 lbs. Spears was 305 out of LSU and now plays at 315.

Its not uncommon for a college player to add 20lbs or so from their college playing weight to there 2nd season playing weight.

Now there are a lot of questions surrounding Smith? A lot of the hoopla, on this forum anyway, is about his weight.

Whether the kid can play or not seems to be an afterthought.

One thing I think posters are overlooking is that most all the scouting reports have Smith as a zone-blocking OT. From watching him , I agree. His ability to gain weight and maintain that weight is a concern . He may be great in a couple of years , but at the moment , size and strength will prevent him from starting . Dallas has always run a power OL. How is Smith going to fit ? IMO he does not fit the power scheme that the Cowboys use.

He can play either. He is agile and strong. He could easily get up to 330lbs+ and still be quick on his feet.

He also made the highly touted (especially here) Cam Jordan look bad by shutting down his pass rush and pushing him off the line of scrimmage in the run game. Just flat-out whipped Jordan.

Yah, because he played against a bunch of 98 pound weaklings in the PAC 10. Guess you must have missed where he played Cam Jordan to a standstill, and Jordan is expected to be a top 10 pick.

I'm not sure if we run a power scheme, but whatever scheme we're running, we don't run it particularly well.

I'd be more inclined to agree if we won any point of attack battles, but our "power" linemen often get overpowered at the point.

I just want better guys, doesn't have to be Tyron Smith but I don't want to run power or finesse, I just want to execute better.

Sherrod took care of Jordan in the Senior Bowl as well when he faced him. The point that I am trying to make is that I don`t want to wait a couple years for this guy to grow into a starter for the Cowboys when ther are some options that can contribute right away. According to the USC staff , Smith`s weight went down as the season went along. He might come in at 310lbs for training camp and by game 10 , he may be down to 280 lbs. How do you think that is gonna work ? There is no evidence that this guy can play at 330lbs or play in a power blocking scheme. Fans can wish , hope , or pray . It still won`t change the facts about Smith. Potential means that he hasn`t done it yet, and there is no solid evidence that he will.

Plus, how many guys get drafted in the Top Ten just to play right tackle? It seems we're happy with Free at LT, and Romo ain't a southpaw, so would we really draft a pure RT that high?

He maybe a right tackle out of the gate, but he is far more talented than Free.

We need a right tackle today. Drafting Smith now solves that problem, then in two years, it gives us a franchise LT and one of the best RTs in the league (Free).

Besides, he is more talented than anyone who will be on the board at #9. There are very few players in this draft that I think are comparable talent wise.

Not really. It's not that they get overpowered, they just get beat off the snap. BIGG, Colombo, etc. They were so slow off the snap, they defenders were around them before they could land their initial punch.

This is a poor excuse for a power scheme due to talent , coaching , etc. , but I would classify it as an attempt to play power football. I agree with you , it needs to be executed better. With the exception of Free , the current line is a massive mess. Big , powerfull guys who get no push of the ball.

Didn't miss that  But one day against Jordon doesn't give me the confidence that he could consistently beat starting NFL RDE's at his current weight. Just speculating

304lbs or 285lbs? He could be 315lbs+ by training camp (if there is a training camp)

Yes I know. He's bulked up for the combine. Great. But this isn't a weight he's really played at so again no proof at #9. Don't get me wrong. I'm not totally opposed to him. I just think we should get a sure thing at that spot or trade down to get someone like Smith.

He is more of a sure thing than many of our options. He is damn well more of a sure thing that Prince!
