Cox or Barron

That isn't going to change his coverage skills. Barron played in the box almost every single play in College. He is basically Roy Williams only slower and not as good of a hitter...not that you can really hit in the NFL anymore.

That's the point though, he's a Strong Safety not a Free Safety and not anywhere near the area code or direction the league is moving towards.

I was skeptical about the pick so I looked at some of his footage.

He is a good tackler and has good instincts but isn't much of a hitter.

He plays the ball pretty well most of the time when he is in zone or center field.

He does a very good job when he had to come up and match against a WR or TE.

Overall I'd be okay with drafting him at #14 but I worry about all that torn tissue he has had (double sports hernia plus another injury I can't remember right now) and I wonder if his soft tissue is strong enough to play the game for many years at the pro level.

I still prefer a trade down but he is a much better player than I initially thought.

What he's spent means nothing if the secondary is still a primary weakness.

Ignoring a primary weakness because you've spent money there is just compounding mistake after mistake.

Partly because of the direct impact on former Cowboys Safety Roy Williams as with the Senseball signing, Elam and now Poole, it appears Jerry is commited to a new NFL and a new kind of NFL Coverage Safety.

Just an educated guess.

Cox is my pet cat, bit I'm warming up to Barron and someone like Jarod Crick, Brandon Thompson or Devin Still in the 2nd

If Cox isn't on the board by #14, Barron should be the easy pick. I could see Philly or the Jets taking him right after our pick.

I'd take cox if he's there at 14. However, I've always been a mark barron fan. Seeing him at field level in 2009, he struck me as a long and lanky fs with centerfield ability. This type guy is not someone we've had in dallas. I'm a DL first guy, but barron will bring a different dimension. That's not even taking into account his leadership ability, he will be the captain of the secondary from day one.

It's close.. We need a DE just as much as we need a safety

You keep saying that and you couldn't be more wrong.

I keep saying what? I haven't said that anywhere else...

I take Cox every time.

I'd also take Coples.

Once those two are gone, I look secondary, and I trust the coaches to make the decision between Barron, Kirkpatrick, or Gilmore (with any moving that goes along with their target).

There's zero chance they'd take Konz in round 1; I just refuse to think they're that foolish.

If they go OL, and I don't think for a second they will, I'd rather get Glenn than DeCastro. I like the fact that Glenn projects to either guard spot but could also play RT if Free craps his pants again.

how is he wrong? Please tell us. Because when you look at the starting DEs and starting safties. We need both positions addressed.

Cox or Barron I don't care, both will come in here day one and be an upgrade, thats all that matters.

Between Fletcher Cox and Mark Barron, who do you think the Cowboys would select?

I think if Cox is on the board and they cannot find a trade down partner, they'll take him.

If the Cowboys can find a trade down partner, I think they'll try and trade down a few spots, pick up an extra 2nd or 3rd, and take Barron.

What do you guys think will happen?
I would be fine with both of those scenarios.
you can even add Decastro as a 3rd possibilty and I'd still be fine.

Your educated guess probably isn't very educated since you just butchered two of the three cowboys you just named.

Last time we picked a Safety in the first round it was Roy "horsecollar" Williams ... ill pass. Gimme Decastro or a defensive front 7 guy (Cox).

I'd take Barron over Cox. I'm not convinced Cox is a good fit for us scheme wise. I know we play sort of a hybrid, but a lot of people call him a true 4-3 DT. The fact that we play with Ratliff at DT as it is, is bad enough. I don't think playing Ratliff at DT or DE and adding Cox who also isn't a great 3-4 fit will help.

In the old NFL that was 55-60% run it made sense to have these run pluggers.

Nowadays offenses take advantage of the pass interference rules and run wide open attacks that make these guys a dinosaur. Premium picks nowadays go to QBs, OTs, WRs, CBs and pass rushers from the front 7. Run sutffing DL, run blocking OL, RBs and in the box safeties are not premium players anymore. They are specialists for short yardage situations and the goalline.

In the modern NFL Cox is a prototype 4-3 3-tech DT or a 1-gap 3-4 DE. He is worth a premium and will probably be a top 10 pick. I was orginally a bit lukewarm on the pick because I wanted more college production but he is probably the second best front 7 player in this draft after Coples but slightly ahead of Kuechly. He can be a force against the run and the pass. I prefer him over DeCastro, Brockers and Barron but the only player I think is worthy of the #14 pick for us is Coples. If he is gone we should trade down. IF the league is down and we can trade down and still get Coples then we should do that but we shouldn't get too cute and miss out on a potential 12 sacks/yr guy.

My dream draft in the first 3 rounds would be a trade down netting us an extra 3rd round pick and then:

1. Coples
2. Zeitler or Brandon Brooks
3a. Casey Heyward
3b. Bruce Irvin
4a. Ryan Broyles
4b. Jamell Fleming

Cox or Barron ?
Cox , 4-3 fit , weak at POA
Barron , solid second round safety with coverage concerns

Pass on both . I would rather trade back or go a different direction .
