I think with the current cap room we would be crazy to not try to get some of these deals done this year - specifically Romo. Wouldn't you be able to give him a huge first year salary instead of a big singing bonus to get it in this year. I also think you do the same with Barber and just go ahead and lock him up. Second tier RB's are not receiving huge contracts so I don't think he would be that expensive.

Unless JJ explodes he would not be that exp to sign either, but he just may choose to go elsewhere. If we were not in a position to get McFadden I think Mike Hart would be a great compliment to Barber. I don't know what round he goes in but I would guess late 1st to second.

Flo or Columbo, I can't see us paying both with the investment we made in Free and Marten in the draft with Mcquistan in the wings too.

I think Flo at guard would not work - too tall and would never be able to move the DT IMO.

I still don't think Crayton will cost much to sign either.

I would get these 3 done as soon as possible. I've got a feeling all these guys are about to have breakout years.

I agree that the idea of the franchise tag is good, but using it causes so many problems that you shouldn't use it without damn good reason. And given the average salary of a top 5 corner (somewhere near $8M), your cap hit would be gigantic for Newman and cap-wise, it would be much smarter to go ahead and sign a big deal.

Exactly. However some players aren't Briggs and actually take the money from the franchise tag and enjoy. Seeing as how Newman voided out the final year of his contract already though, I'm assuming he wants to get paid now, so it probably wouldn't be a good idea to franchise him.

When was the last time you remember Jerry letting a good player walk? I can't remember one. It doesn't happen. Barber and Romo are Cowboys for a very long time. Julius may go. I'd like to keep Flozell and I think we will.

1. Romo will get his contract probably around the bye week if he continues to play well.

2. MBIII will be a restricted FA next year so Cowboys can keep him by paying him around $1.7M for 08 season. If another team wants him, they'll have to give us their first round pick in 08 season. If we want to ensure he remains a Cowboy, we can offer him a longer contract for more money. Don't forget MBIII's new agent is same agent TO has.

3. Cowboys will keep Newman and pay him accordingly. He and Romo are the two biggies.

4. Marc Colombo signed a 2 year contract early in 07. If he performs well, they can throw that away and offer him a longer term deal or hold off for another year.

5. Flozel is the big question. He'll be 32 next year and do we want shell out big bucks over a 5 year period to keep him? OTOH: Will Doug Free be ready after only one season to start in his 2nd year as our LT? Could McQuistan win that LT job? Flozel won't like being franchized for a year but a 5 year day is probalby not smart. We'll see how well Flozel plays.

6. Ken Hamlin wasn't only the list but we signed him for only 1 year. If he produces big time, we'll pay him. If not hope either Watkins or Brown step it up or we'll have to sign another FA FS or use high draft pick on one.
