Creating turnovers

Yes, we could use improvement. But the game is so much different than it was when Walls was playing. You could practically mug receivers down the field. You can't do that now. Heck, you can barely touch them without a pass interference penalty.

Be that as it may, when the pass rush improves, I expect the secondary play to improve also.

If the NFL wants less concussions, they should adopt the "mugging" rules of the 1970's. Nothing wrong with that NFL.

Pass rush is the biggest key to causing turnovers, especially when the secondary guys are average. You can get by with the guys we have, but you have to create pressure on the opposing QB. We haven't done that.

The evidence here would seem to contradict that idea.

You need to be able to switch up coverages. Going from zone to man. Going from press to playing off. Playing some different types of zone. If you can do that, then the QB doesn't always know where to go with the ball, mistakes get made and turnovers are there to be had.

The Cowboys were second to last in passing attempts against the defense last year. That is why we didn't get turnovers. Teams simply weren't throwing the ball that much,

Teams actually passed more against us last season than they did in 2014 -- until they got in the fourth quarter and didn't have to pass as much anymore. Even with more passes being thrown against us in the first three quarters of games last season, our interception rate was much lower than it was in the first three quarters of games in 2014. We also had as many interceptions just in the fourth quarter of games in 2014, when our opponents often had to pass, as we had in the entire 2015 season.

since your a stats type of guy, i wonder what the time of possession difference was between 2014 and 2015 in the first 3 quarter you mentioned. I would guess that in 2014 our offense was chewing up a lot of clock by effectively running the ball.

In 2015, the Ravens had a league low of .8 fumbles per game and buffalo had a league high of 1.8 fumbles per game. Kansas City had a league low of .4 ints per game and Dallas had a league high of 1.4 ints per game.

But overall I agree that getting take aways is very important for team success. In 2014, I believe durant and carter also chipped in several ints.

Carter actually led team with 5 INTs in 2014.

Purely speaking of takeaways here..

2014 - 31
2015 - 11

Church. Claiborne. Carr. Scandrick

None of them are big INT guys at the nfl level..granted, we generated 18 INTs w these 4 in our secondary in 2014 but where are the takeaways going to come from

Jones didn't really look like a ball hawk last year..now, he will be a full time safety it appears so maybe that helps...maybe not

Many people are discussing overall defensive play...Imo, this defense has to get back to taking the ball away for this team to succeed like we want...

But exactly where are these turnovers going to come from? I think it's safe to say that the 4 players above won't amount to much in the INT department..we have enough evidence to say that confidently
A little more pressure from the front 4

The lack of turnovers might indicate that the defensive coach Marinelli is loading the players' heads with too much technique, nuance and too much diagraming as opposed to letting the players be aggressive and react. Simple as that.

Our offense ran effectively both seasons. For different reasons, our offense also chewed up a lot of clock both seasons.

Time of Average Possession
1st-3rd quarter
2014 3:13 (1st in NFL)
2015 3:07 (2nd in NFL)

The difference in the two seasons offensively was that we were the best passing team in the league in 2014, and the 30th-best in 2015. Because of our inability to pass, we couldn't score points, so we lost a lot of games.

Improved pass rush will help.

I don't necessarily mean more sacks (Though that absolutely would be great) but just more constant pressure on the opposing QB more regularly.

Yes. A better pass rush means more hurried QB throws and more tipped balls, bad QB decisions, etc.

You hit on it. When the opposing team is behind and knows they are not going to have many possessions (see Zeke) they will have to take more chances. That's what will lead to mistakes and turnovers

Let me add that to Zeus Elliott List.
1. Extend Romo's Career.
2. Make the Defense better.
3. Make Garrett into a better coach.
4. More Sacks
5. More turn overs.
