Critical Mistake Was Letting It Known We Were Not Going To Keep Romo

Going back there should have been talks with Romo about a "competition" for qb when he got healthy last year. If they were really serious about dealing him this year the charade of a competition would have laid the groundwork for it. He should have played one or two of the meaningless games.

If Tony believes it, he never would have made that cheezy speech. Hell with emotions we would have a couple suitors but what the heck do I know right? "We owe it to Tony" malarkey.

lol. Tony is done in Big D. For everyones sake..to me...Tony needs to retire

I don't think Romo will make less than what he is currently set to make this year if he is cut. His salary is cheap for a starting QB

It's only cheap if he plays 14+ games and is available for the playoffs. That's the problem. His current contract is too expensive if you don't have confidence he will stay healthy. He will get a deal that will allow him to make the same money but only if he stays healthy. I still contend that Jerry needs to give Romo permission to speak with teams to renegotiate his contract. I think if Romo and his agent were allowed to go meet with Houston and Denver, they could come to an agreeable contract and convince them to trade for him.

Jerry, Stephen, FO... none of them released a statement saying they were going to release Romo. Romo never said he had an agreement to be released. So how is this so called "critical mistake" being attributed to the Cowboys? The media is the one that put that rumor out there. So put the blame where it belongs with the media when acknowledging things got screwed up. The Cowboys plan was to trade Romo when FA started, not release him. The imminent release rumor effectively dried up the trade market for Romo. This will be remedied when an injury to a contenting team's QB occurs. A trade is coming, we just have to exercise extreme patience. Meanwhile, enjoy having the best backup QB in the league on the roster.

Jerry and the organization really screwed up by totally telegraphing that Romo was done in Big D. The team should have announced that the difference between releasing Romo and keeping him was only $5 million and that the organization would be more than comfortable with Romo and Dak competing for the job. However, the team would be open to moving Romo if fair compensation was offered. That's it, that's all you say and you shut the hell up about everything else.

You don't freaking broadcast to the entire league that Romo is done, its Dak's team now, we are moving on, and both the team and Romo have agreed to "do right" by each other.

I am honestly not surprised all the teams are ignoring our trade demands, they know its total BS and that Jerry is not going to hold Romo hostage for any extended period of time, maybe a couple of weeks at max. So if I am a GM, why the hell am I trading any picks away for a player that I know for a fact will be released? Yea, I may have to outbid some teams for Romo, but draft picks are way more valuable than money. The Browns handed Osweiler a check for $17 million just to get a 2nd round pick. That is how valuable draft picks are now days. So if I am a GM, I can overpay out the arse in my offer to Romo if I don't have to give up any picks.

The entire problem and the reason we cant get a trade done is because nobody believes we will keep him and that is where the critical error was made.
They actually didn't. Jerry said that they were looking at everything, including keeping him. I'm pretty sure that it is Romo's agent that is leaking things that could be true or not true. The agent wants him to be released so that he can get paid for doing a new deal.

I'm not quite getting what you're saying here....

You're not saying they should have lied to Romo and said he could compete for the job fair and square but really have no real intention of doing that, are you?

I probably misunderstood. Did I?

I think anyone with an ounce of sense knew that Dallas was not going to keep Romo. 24 mill dollar back up's do not exist in the NFL

HIghest salary cap in the league this year. Not sure how it was a critical mistake when anyone with a lick of common sense could easily figure it out.

Fully agree. I don't say this as any kind of knock on Romo. I loved watching him and have defended him against critics for years. However if you take emotions out of it and look at the situation, you have a QB who is still under contract for 3 years and a very high salary, it makes no sense to have that player as a backup. Once Cowboys made the choice of going with Dak that pretty much sealed the deal. Cowboys will look to get a backup at a fairly low cost and save money on the cap.

I think they could have planned ahead better about his playtime last year with the intention of his impending trade.

What happens when Dak goes down in the 2nd game of the year?

They have kept him so far.

Yes they have, I don't expect him to remain beyond the June 1st date. I think Cowboys are trying to do right by Romo and do the right thing for the overall team. I do not suspect that Romo is content with finishing his career as a backup in Dallas.

You turn to the backup just as every other team does but teams do not keep one of the highest priced players on the bench as a backup that is just stupid.

It isn't stupid if Dak goes down. Nobody would say it is stupid if Dak was the backup. It is the same money either way.

Raises a different question I hadn't thought of....
What if Dak went down for 8-9 weeks early in the year and Dallas ran the table with Romo.
Would Dak then be the starter when he returned?

He could go another year. Dak gets hurt and Romo gets his job back. You never know.

No, Romo would have his job back and he makes too much money to be the backup and everybody lives happy ever after.
