I'm not sure I disagree. It's not like we don't do a good job stopping the run when our LBs are in the game and we aren't down to playing DEs at DT due to injuries. David Irving is absolutely a 3T, not a run stuffing 330 lber. Would you rather have Irving and Vea or Irving and Payne than Irving and Irving? If we draft another 3T who is disruptive, it's not like someone will have to sit the bench so a JAG 1T can play. The 1T guys are more for short yardage plays and jumbo packages. Tell me you wouldn't line up 2 Aaron Donalds and take your chances without a big stud run stuffer.

They play Irving at 3T (and end) but he really isn't the prototype. He's a nickel rusher, matchup player.

I will say if the team is bringing back Irving for 2018 and Maliek Collins is healthy then we're OK at DT for the short term, but would still like to see us grab another talented one somewhere in rounds 2-4. You need at least 3 interior lineman to rotate in today's NFL.

And yes, it's completely and utterly dumb that they let Marinelli, a guy who is likely a short timer here anyway, dictate who they can take along the DL and who they can't take.

Our talent evaluators have zero philosophy on scheme or talent to rely upon so they end up building with the blocks each defensive coordinator values. Then when they are gone, they have to completely re-evaluate and then are stuck with players that don't fit.

Look back in history. Playing two 3 tech types at DT has never worked. Why do you think it suddenly will?

Is anyone really surprised?

From all the 1Tech posts in the draft section id say there are going to be alot suprised. I keep telling people Dallas doesnt utilize the 1tech much because basically the NFL doesnt prioritize the run much. And alot of Dallas problems came at the MIKE. Smith couldnt really defend the run yet because basically he was playing on one leg. And Hitchens has always and still is a liability on runs up the gut. But later in the season Smith played the run very good as he started getting his foot issue sorted.
