Curious about George

No. If not dealt or signed by July 16 he can’t be traded. He can’t even sign a deal with the Cowboys after July 15 if he’s tagged. This is not 2019. Is it?
You could be right, I'm just unaware of a rule change that says tagged players cant be traded after that date.

Regardless waiting until mid July for a resolution to the Pickens contract is way too late anyways. My point is that if you're going to trade Pickens its best to do so while you still have time to play in free agency. The worst thing that could happen is a scenario where the Cowboys end up with a tag on the player all year and eat $28+m in cap space on him.

That would be the worst. No resolution by July 16 Pickens wouldn’t even be allowed to sign a contract with the Cowboys. The tag is a last resort that allows a team to retain a player’s services that they cannot come to terms with on a new contract.

Tagging Pickens is a slippery slope. Williams’ agent has some leverage with the Cowboys and is certainly using it to get a lucrative deal from the Cowboys. Teams can only tag one player and he knows Jerry has to reserve it for Pickens if it becomes necessary. Not surprised they’re in negotiations with Javonte now.

THIS. What some Cowboy fans simply fail to acknowledge. We saw what happened when Owens, Bryant and Cooper were let go or traded. In all three cases the offense suffered the following year.
This lacks nuance, acting as if trading Pickens represents a blow it up strategy. The Cowboys will still have a top 5 WR in CeeDee. And they have something in Flournoy. Yes, another $30 million WR IS A LUXURY!!! That's especially the case when the team's makeup is so unbalanced. If you're so worried about the WR room after dealing Pickens, then draft his replacement with some of what comes back in the trade. Even if you draft a WR (in a good, deep WR draft) with the same #1 that comes in return, that's a $25 million savings.

I'll take A&M's Concepcion + money for Quay Walker over just Pickens.
