Thank God we locked up Jed Collins, though. Definitely better than having a draft pick.

Wait, what about for Murray? I see a 4th for Parnell and 6th for Carter? Unless I'm misunderstanding. Edit: Oh wait never mind, didn't see the Hardy thing next to him.

Hardy cancelled Murray out. Nothing for him.

This confuses me, however, since Hardy was released by Carolina. I thought it was related only to players whose contracts run out.

I think the length of the contract signed should have some bearing in the compensation given.

We lost Murray to a multi-year deal, but got Hardy for only 1 year. I don't think that should completely eliminate the 3rd round pick. Maybe drop it down to like a 5th or something. But that's just my opinion.

That only counts for the team that lost the player. For the team receiving the player, it doesn't matter how they left their team, it still negates a pick for us. Carolina won't receive a compensatory pick next year for Hardy if he was released (but I thought his contract ran out?)

By the way, not too bad with getting a 4th for Parnell, considering he was undrafted. Probably a pretty even trade I'd say.

He wasn't released. He was franchised by Carolina last year, and his franchise deal expired this offseason.

I'm not sure that article is right. The others list a 1MM cutoff to get a 7th round comp pick so its hard for me to believe signing veteran minimum contracts causes you to lose the corresponding comp pick for a much bigger contract. I don't think any of these articles really are certain about it, AdamJT knows this better than the vast majority of sportswriters drawing a paycheck and his predictions are usually on the mark, but not always.

My impression is that we are in better shape than this article says, but obviously I don't know for sure.

Also don't they have to see how the seasons plays out with incentives before they can make that judgment? I question the article saying Murray's contract is only worth a 4th and not the maximum 3rd, plus if Hardy only earns half of his incentives and is paid 4MM next year I can't see how that would be equal to 18MM guaranteed to Murray.

Nice articles but Fisher leaves out the fact that Hardy will count less depending on his suspension and Brinkley and McFadden have to be on the roster opening day for them to count. Yes part of the deal is what they signed for but 2/3 is impact and being on the field. Might we get just a 4th and 6th, yes, but we also could end up with 4 picks in 3,4,5 and 6 or possibly two in the 4th. Nothing is set in stone with this and we won't have a clue until March of 2016 really.

Yeah, you really want a crack at drafting the 254th player overall. No way that dude is going to be available UDFA or anything.

Yeah, I'd definitely rather have to compete with other teams for UDFA players than grab them in the 7th.

In fact, let's just make the 7th round obsolete. All those guys are gonna be available as UDFA anyway.

So your reason to not sign someone who can contribute in the current season is that we can pick someone who likely would not get drafted otherwise. Oh yeah, and the guy we pick would likely have a very small chance of actually making the team.

Great logic.

That was my exact initial reaction also. I can wait until next off season to find out for sure.

Hardy was an UFA. He wasn't released. He played under the Franchise Tag last year.

And it matters to both the team losing the player and signing the player if he is qualified for comp picks.

We declined an option on Melton so he doesn't count for us or against TB.

Hardy will help CAR get a pick and for DAL it will negate the 3rd round pick for Murray
We could possibly get it back if Hardy leaves after next season.

Jed Collins won't count in the equation, and Hardy's value in the equation will depend on how much he ends up playing and how much money he ends up making. He might cancel out a lower pick -- if he cancels out anyone at all.

Who did NE lose last year to warrant a third round pick this year?

I was always confused how they calculate a bunch of low picks vs. one higher one.

Aqib Talib to DEN, but DEN still got 4 picks.

It's all about losing more than you sign. DEN lost 8 and signed 3.

Since Revis was released by TB he didn't cancel out Talib for NE.

Interesting, I was always led to believe it didn't matter how the newly signed player left their previous team. But I guess that's because of the relative secrecy about the comp pick formula.
