Cut Carr or make him take a pay cut?

He's not going anywhere this season. He will probably be gone next season.

This move is more about fixing the Claiborne situation. The Cowboys telegraphed their round 1 choice of best CB available when the story hit the wire yesterday that they weren't picking up Claiborne's option.

The Cowboys signed a contract. They should be required to honor the contract that they signed or cut him altogether. It's greedy to go back and just expect a player to make less money so you can preserve cap space.

(Or so I'm told whenever a player under contract wants more money).

Yep. I hear a bunch of fans saying a player should be willing to take a pay cut if he doesn't live up to his contract. But I never hear them say a player should demand money if he plays above his pay grade. Go figure.

Why cut your nose off to spite your face?
We gave him that contract....why cut him? What's that do for us? What do you want to do with that money?
We are better off playing him....even if Jones proves as a rookie to be number 1 (not likely), why cut your 3rd best CB? You need 4-5 of them and 4 that will actually play.

Carr's salary is out of line...so what? It's not like you're going to sign a better CB for the savings. Ideally, Carr isn't the guy you push aside. Ideally, you push Patmon or one of our safeties aside with Jones patrolling the deep zone at times. We are a better secondary with Scandrick, Carr, Jones, and Claibourne!

Doug Free didn't take a paycut until May 17. After the draft is when they do it, because the player and agent know there isn't a market out there for more.

What many of you don't understand is that Carr doesn't have anything to worry about.

If we cut him, we still pay him a big chunk of money, so even if he signs for less salary with another team, that and his Cowboys money is still a big payday for 2015.

And what do we get after cutting him in June? We save a few million but there are no other CBs to spend it on...lol. His money isn't even key to signing Dez.

There is no benefit to us during games on Sundays to cut Carr at this point, in my opinion.

I say make him take a pay cut and if he refuses cut him. We still need him for the right price.

Can't cut him until we know more about the draft and FA.

But, halfing said that, I do think it is time that we sever the cord with him after last season. Such an unspectacular corner.

Carr gets paid nothing if he's cut. He's already been paid.

That's not what I read months ago....I read we will have dead money that is owed, even after June 1. Part of his bonus? I don't think there's any way you cut a guy like him with a contract and big bonus that was spread out and backloaded and walk away without owing and having some dead money...just like when we cut Ratliff and others, right?

I expect Carr to be on the team this year at a base salary of 8 mill but I also think this will likely be his last season in Dallas.

Almost all of Carrs dead money is from restructured bonuses that were paid when they were restructured, but are spread across multiple years for cap purposes.

Like a signing bonus. Paid when the guy signs but gets spread across multiple years.

If he's cut, Dallas takes all the cap charges on the rest of that money but Carr doesn't see any of it because he already has it. That's why it's dead money. It's been paid, but hasn't been charged to the cap.

Doesnt make sense to cut him. I think we are done with having a ton of dead money.

I like Carr- seems like a good guy. He made a lot of big time plays his first year here. Who knows, maybe he turns it around this year.

So he's not seeing additional money, but we are still penalized on the cap if we cut him, though overall we would save money...got it...still makes no sense to cut a starting or even #3 CB over money unless there's a way to make the team better with the savings.

Can't make him take a pay cut. I think they keep him at his current salary and next year he is cut.

Yes, I think so too.

I do think the Cowboys will approach Carr once again post-Draft. But I'm not holding out hope he accepts a pay cut. Assuming he doesn't, I think the Cowboys will cut him next year.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the Cowboys draft yet another CB later this Draft. I think they may cover themselves for 2016 with both Claiborne and Carr departing (most likely).

I'd be inclined to keep Carr at least through training camp. Maybe in exchange for cutting his salary in half, I'd garuntee a certain portion, but at his full price, he would need to hope that Claiborne still sucks and/or we missed on Jones.

Wait until the cut down day after training camp to make the decision.

This is the point that the team will have the most info about the talent and health of other players. It is also the time when other teams with have the least cap space.

It's not about cap space as much as production.

Is Carr worth 8m a year, that is the only question. The dead money alone pales in comparison to his salary+the dead money.

Dallas can tell him take a 50% pay cut to 4m or get cut. After the draft and after FA is no time for a high priced vet to hit the market. He may get some money, but he probably won't get 4m a year.

It would be smarter to stay with Dallas and guarantee 4m vs a possible 2-6m from someone else.

Players hold out when they 'outplay' their contract, but they never return any money when they under-perform. Its just business.
