I don't want to see the guy cut at this point, simply because there is no reason to. That being said, I do have some problems with him then go all the way back to this college days. Go check out any of his college games on YouTube. The one that sticks out to me the most was when he played against the University of Georgia his senior year. There were several things in the game that stuck with me, and they were still evident when he played last year.
He doesn't have the "NFL arm". By that I mean there are several throws he simply cannot make. Anything that requires being thrown more than 15 yards downfield is a risky pass for Kellen Moore. He can't get the deep sideline passes there with any zip on the ball. Defenders have the opportunity to break and make a play. Throws of that distance or longer, thrown to the middle of the field have a separate accompanying issue in addition to)… He always delivers them high. I can only assume his height and having to throw over on-rushing defensive lineman causing this. Both of these issues can be a witnessed on his college tape. Cue up that Georgia game and see for yourself.
This is severely limiting for any prospective NFL quarterback. If you can't make the deep side line throws, and you can't make anything more than 20 yards over the middle, you are allowing the defense to narrow the field they have to defend against you. You might as well tell the defense, "play within the numbers and no deeper than 20 to 30 yards off the ball".
He was perfect for the offensive system Chris Pedersen ran at Boise. The majority of passes were quick developing routes that were thrown within a 15 yard radius from the point of release. The rare passes that were thrown in the 15 to 25 yard range were all between the numbers, and all of them – even the passes that were caught – came in high.
I have nothing personal against Moore. I think he's got quite a sharp mind and a good grasp of what makes an offense work in the NFL. If he were to go that route, I believe he would make an outstanding coach, and eventually a top-flight offensive Coordinator. I just happen to think – through no fault of his own – he is not an NFL quarterback.
