No matter what Roy will cost us money if we cut. I dont understand why people cannot see that. We owe Roy money, cap or no cap we have to pay that to him whether or not he's on the team.

Can't rid of both Davis and Colombo IMO, or that O-line is gonna be worse off. Just get rid of the worse one. I know. LOL, tough call.

Roy should be around another season. Don't know which Austin is gonna show up and still up in the air about Bryant. No depth behind that.

salaries are never guaranteed, rather signing bonuses are prorated over the course of a contract, and all the remaining signing bonus on years remaining are accelerated into the cap as a penalty when a player is released.

i.e.

player signs for 5 million for 5 years with a 5 million signing bonus

year 1 - 2 million
year 2 - 2 million
year 3 - 2 million
year 4 - 2 million
year 5 - 2 million

total - 10 million (5 salary + 5 signing bonus)

if you release a player in year 2 you still have 4 million dollars in cap penalties, so it costs more on the cap to release that player in year 2.

the only year where you will benefit from releasing them (other than not having to continue paying the player) would be year 5. Where the cap hit is 1 million versus paying him 2.

I get that, but 2 people have said even if there's no cap, we still have to pay him. I do know that if there's no cap, we may have to pay some portion of his salary, but it won't hurt us with the salary cap

sometimes portions of a contract are garunteed outside the signing bonus. I guess he has some bonus or part of his salary garunteed. Reguardless, if that number were small and there was no salary cap, I would entertain the idea of releasing him

I dont have the exact details, or the link but if we were to cut Roy before this season he would count 9mil against our payroll.

Cap or no cap we still have a payroll. We still have to pay the players the money that we gave them as signing bonuses on the contract. All a cap does is tell a team how much they can spend.

Signing bonus money is paid UP FRONT.

He has already received his signing bonus money. The only affect that has on the books in when the signing bonus is accelerated upon release or trade.

so if he is released then it is accelerated...hence the 9mil hit on payroll.
