This was the picture of Sam going into the draft...
Sam, at 6-foot-2 and 260 pounds, starred in college football last season. Besides being first team All-American, he was named the top defensive player in the Southeastern Conference, considered the nation's best league. Teammates named him the team's most valuable player.
The issue is of his level of play, not the accumulated circus to raise considerations. He showed talent, as he did prior to the draft. But he didn't show a team clinching level to stay with the Rams.
He was the 249th of 256 players selected. And he found himself in a similar vein that Jeffcoat found himself as well. So far, he was a very good collegiate player, but not presently translating to the professional levels. Both players could have a mental side that restricts their top end levels...but are somewhat soft for the game.
Talking about scheme, the Rams are a 4-3 defensive scheme. They had a strong setup up front. Chris Long proved himself strongly out. Since they picked up Aaron Donald, already had at defensive end:
Chris Long,
Robert Quinn,
William Hayes and
Eugene Sims, the rotation and talent was already pretty high.
I would have to agree that my projections upon him, were in the vein of a 4-3 defensive end...but Sam still meets the appearance of not being a fast enough player at this level to warrant a look by Dallas. The rest of the discussion, is merely around the hype and excitement with a storyline not centered in football or merit. Sexual preferences should remain out of discussions at the professional levels, when need, and not persuasion...no matter how one nit picks around issues to add sensationalism in effect.
