I wouldn't mind them looking at Connor (FB), Hyder (DT), Allen (LB) or the DE released by Seattle.

But the thing is, at least in my opinion, we are not supposed to be able to do better. We are not the professionals. If we need to be content with a bad GM because 'we' cannot do any better, we're going to be a .500 team forever.

Not my point. It isn't that we should be happy when the team does poorly with its draft picks. It's the complaining when we "miss out" on a player like Phillip Thomas. It's silly to get upset over not picking a player when we have no idea how that player's career will turn out.

MY ALL TAKE A LOOK LIST:
Devon Still from the Bengals(DT)
Denicos Allen rookie cut by Carolina(LB)
Orson Charles cut by Cincinnati (TE/H-Back)
Sam Montgomery cut by Cincinnati(DE)
Reid Fregel cut by Cleveland (OT)
Duke Ihenacho cut by Denver (2013 starting SS)
Deandre Coleman rookie cut by Jacksonvile (DT)
Fred Evans cut by Minnesota (DT)
Jerell Worthy cut by NE (DT)
Jake Bequette cut by NE (DE)
Kelcy Quarles cut by G'nats (DT)
John Conner cut by G'nats (FB)
Kerry Hyder rookie cut by Jets (DT)
Ed Reynolds rookie cut by Eagles (FS)
Larry English cut by Tampa (DE)
Phillip Thomas cut by Commanders (S)
Howard Jones rookie cut by Steelers (DE)

Looks like a lot of work done here. Thanks. I'm sorry but I just don't know the entire league and envy you guys and gals who do. I do know Conner and wonder what the story is there. Quarles I mistrust his consistency mostly due to effort (at SC). Nice job.

Ok, since no one has started a thread about him.....guess I will.

First, let me say that I have been neutral on the subject and I know about his desire or lack there of to play in the NFL, if he wants attention and/or a reality show, etc, etc. Putting aside all of the media attention for a moment, should the Cowboys go after this guy?

I have watched him in the pre-season and he seems really active and might be a gamer. Our DL is in disarray and this might be a perfect opportunity to take a chance on him. The Rams have a pretty deep DL and I did not expect him to make the final cut, but can he help in big D? IDK

If he has some chip on his shoulder and wants to show the world that he can play, it might just be a worthy gamble. I expect about 10 teams are pondering the same thought and may make a play on the guy.

There isn't a bigger stage than Dallas, so this could work out if they do try and sign him. His story would not last more than a few weeks before it reverts back to Romo, Jones and Garrett, he would just kind of blend in at some point.....may even be forgotten if/when Brent comes back.

Just spit-balling here, just wondering if he has the skill-set to take a risk on at this point considering our current circumstances. It would be a shame to ignore him if he turns out to be a decent player that teams passed on because of the potential controversy that could follow........

Well thought out post. IDK if Sam can play in the NFL. He'll get a shot somewhere. My guess is he either has to wait until next year or get picked up by another team. I don't want to bump anyone off the roster right now at that position for a player who is an unknown.

I am in the minority, but one guy I wouldn't mind looking at, at least for our practice squad is DE Chris McAllister. The Texans cut him. I think under Marinelli, he could really develop into something. He even has the ability to slide to OLB on occasion, if needed.

It's actually the other way around

He's more of a fit as an outside linebacker in a 3-4,

but not really fast to be in line for a 4-3 defensive end.

That he is NOT fast enough, is why he wasn't considered in the Dallas defense from the start. He was available when the Cowboys selected two different types of linebackers. The team additionally focused upon a speed rusher, Lawrence, because that was their greatest need. The team had an abundance of candidates for a strong side defensive end.

Until Sam develops up from where he's seen now, he probably still isn't even a choice by the scouts/staff even now. I see no reason why if he didn't fit through the draft picture, he would now be a candidate for defensive end now...plain and simple.

Now, since you have stated both sides of a flip/flop are wrong...prove your case. And who were the few remaining pursuers in the draft? 3-4 or 4-3 to prove out your case.

This was the picture of Sam going into the draft...

Sam, at 6-foot-2 and 260 pounds, starred in college football last season. Besides being first team All-American, he was named the top defensive player in the Southeastern Conference, considered the nation's best league. Teammates named him the team's most valuable player.

The issue is of his level of play, not the accumulated circus to raise considerations. He showed talent, as he did prior to the draft. But he didn't show a team clinching level to stay with the Rams.

He was the 249th of 256 players selected. And he found himself in a similar vein that Jeffcoat found himself as well. So far, he was a very good collegiate player, but not presently translating to the professional levels. Both players could have a mental side that restricts their top end levels...but are somewhat soft for the game.

Talking about scheme, the Rams are a 4-3 defensive scheme. They had a strong setup up front. Chris Long proved himself strongly out. Since they picked up Aaron Donald, already had at defensive end: Chris Long, Robert Quinn, William Hayes and Eugene Sims, the rotation and talent was already pretty high.

I would have to agree that my projections upon him, were in the vein of a 4-3 defensive end...but Sam still meets the appearance of not being a fast enough player at this level to warrant a look by Dallas. The rest of the discussion, is merely around the hype and excitement with a storyline not centered in football or merit. Sexual preferences should remain out of discussions at the professional levels, when need, and not persuasion...no matter how one nit picks around issues to add sensationalism in effect.

OK... first... who are you talking about... Sam??? First, I have to say that I have a negative inclination to that lifestyle.. that's where it ends. When he first came out in the draft, I didn't think he had the speed, size, or power to play in the NFL. I'm still not sure he does in a permanent roll but after seeing his clips in a Rams uniform I think he at least has a shot to outseat what we are rolling out there on the right side. We will see.

He has never played on the right side. The rams didn't even try him there.

I actually didn't even think he'd be cut, must be nice to be the Rams D-Line coach, having that kind of surplus.

well, the Rams lessons show much like the browns did with OL previously, you need a lot more than a great trench group to win.
it isn't easy to build a complete team and weak links kill you as much if not more than excellent groups hurt you.

there is a reason Tom Brady hasn't won a Super Bowl in a decade... and that mousey Eli has two of them.

rams need help everywhere but DL.
i am actually surprised they didn't trade a couple vet DL for real help then rely on Westbrooks and Sam.
would have been maximizing their resources.

i could care less about sam's sexual preference in either pro or anti way. but he led the league in sacks in pre-season and is a former SEC def. player of the year.
he is absolutely a gamer who can get to the passer.
really hard to just cut a guy like that for wearing too much mascara....
haley was terrorizing teammates and coaches.

Other potential FA targets:

DB/KR Danieal Manning 5-11 215 4.4 - played & excelled under Marinelli, hurt last season
OLB/DE Dontay Moch 6-2 255 4.4 - has quality that Marinelli covets, speed and lots of it
DE Michael Sam 6-2 260 - not fast, not athletic but just knows how to pass rush
DT Kevin Vickerson 6-5 330 - huge run stopper, proven starter on SB team

Good list but we won't sign any of them.

He would probably start tomorrow with the DE talent we have today.
